Zell am See in Thumersbach — online webcam
Thumersbach: viewpoint over Lake Zell
On the eastern shore of Lake Zell, at an altitude of 760 meters above sea level, lies Thumersbach — a formerly independent village, now a district of Zell am See. This is where the panoramic webcam is located, offering a view of the alpine valley toward the Schmittenhöhe mountain range. The real-time broadcast allows you to observe the changing light on the slopes, cloud movement over the peaks, and the life of a small resort town right by the water.
Geographical location and landscape
Thumersbach is located in the federal state of Salzburg, in the Pinzgau region — a historical area covering the Salzach River valley and its tributaries. From the camera's viewpoint, you can see Lake Zell, which stretches from north to south for 4.7 kilometers with a maximum width of about 1.5 kilometers. The lake reaches a depth of 68 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in the region.
On the left slope, a dense coniferous forest is visible, descending from the upper elevations right to the water's edge. In the valley are residential neighborhoods of Zell am See, commercial development along the waterfront, and public buildings. In the background rise mountain ranges whose peaks are often shrouded in clouds. The foreground of the camera features green meadows and standalone trees, creating a sense of depth.
Mountain ranges in view
The main peaks captured by the camera lens are Schmittenhöhe (1965 m) and the Kitzsteinhorn massif. Schmittenhöhe dominates the southern part of the valley and is a popular ski area with cable cars starting right from Zell am See. Kitzsteinhorn, located to the southwest, is known for its glacier and year-round skiing.
Between these massifs, passes and lower ridges covered with alpine meadows are visible. In clear weather, snowfields on the upper slopes can be seen, while on cloudy days, clouds drift along the slopes, creating a dramatic atmosphere typical of the Alpine foothills.
Climate and seasonal features
Zell am See lies in a temperate continental climate zone with pronounced mountain influence. Winters here are cold with stable snow cover, and summers are warm with frequent rainfall. Lake Zell does not freeze every year, but in harsh winters its surface becomes covered with ice that can be walked on.
The webcam in Thumersbach captures these seasonal changes: from snowy slopes and snow-covered roofs in winter to the emerald green meadows and swimmers in the lake during summer. In autumn, the forests on the slopes turn yellow-orange, and in spring, active snowmelt begins on the peaks.
Tourist infrastructure
Zell am See is one of Austria's most famous ski resorts, part of the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang region. In winter, ski and snowboard enthusiasts come here, while in summer, tourists interested in hiking, cycling, and water sports on the lake visit.
Thumersbach, being part of this resort cluster, maintains a quieter character compared to the center of Zell am See. There are private chalets, apartments, and small hotels focused on family vacations. From the webcam, you can see the lake promenade, yacht and boat docks, and parking areas by the water.
Surroundings and attractions
In addition to the lake itself and the ski slopes, there are several notable places around Thumersbach. On the opposite shore of Lake Zell, the town of Zell am See is visible with its historic center, where Baroque-style buildings have been preserved. Higher up the slope are vineyards — some of the northernmost in Europe.
Toward Oberpinzgau, north along the Salzach valley, are other resort towns: St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Flachau. Although they are not directly visible from the Thumersbach camera, geographically the entire region forms a single tourist zone with developed infrastructure.
Technical features of the broadcast
The webcam is installed at a fixed point and operates in real-time mode. The panoramic lens captures a wide viewing angle, allowing you to see the lake, urban development, and mountain ranges simultaneously. Image quality depends on weather conditions: on clear days, the finest details on the slopes are visible, while in fog or snowfall, visibility decreases.
The broadcast is available around the clock, allowing you to observe the location at different times of day — from dawn, when the first rays illuminate the peaks, to sunset, painting the lake in golden tones. At night, the camera captures city lights and rare lights on the slopes.
