Moosehead Lake in Rockwood, Maine — Live Webcam on The Birches Resort Terrace
Moosehead Lake: The Jewel of Maine
Moosehead Lake is the largest body of water in Maine and one of the most picturesque in New England. Located in the western part of the region, it stretches for dozens of kilometers, surrounded by dense forests and low mountains. It is here, on the northwest shore, that The Birches Resort is located — a place where you can watch the water surface and mountains right from a wooden terrace at the water's edge.
This live webcam shows the open terrace of the resort with picnic tables and benches. Beyond it is the water surface of Moosehead Lake with a dock in the distance and trees around the perimeter. The broadcast is in real time, allowing you to see how the lighting changes throughout the day and how the shore looks in different seasons.
The Birches Resort History: A Family Resort Since 1930
The Birches Resort was built in 1930 by a local logging contractor who chose one of the best spots on Moosehead Lake — on the northwest shore, with a view to the east and Mount Kineo. Since then, the resort has remained a family business and is managed by the Willard family.
Over nearly a century of history, the complex has transformed from a modest lakeside retreat into a full-fledged resort with a restaurant, dock, and water access. The wooden terrace shown by the live camera is one of the guests' favorite spots: they have breakfast with a lake view, have picnics, and watch the sunsets here.
Mount Kineo: The Dominant Peak of the Lake
From the terrace and rooms of The Birches Resort, there is a view of Mount Kineo — a rock formation rising above Moosehead Lake. This is one of the region's landmarks: steep cliffs of hornfels (a type of siliceous shale) rise directly from the water, creating a dramatic landscape.
Mount Kineo is a popular hiking destination. A network of trails leads to the summit, and from the top there is a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding forests. In clear weather, the peak is visible from the resort terrace — it is exactly what can be seen in the background of the broadcast.
The Steamboat Katahdin: A Historic Vessel on the Lake
Moosehead Lake is closely connected with the history of navigation in Maine. Since 1914, the steamboat Katahdin has operated here — the oldest vessel built at the Bath Iron Works shipyard in the city of Bath that is still afloat.
The steamboat is 102–104 feet long and 28 feet wide. The vessel was commissioned by M.G. Shaw of Bath — a landowner and sawmill owner who needed a ship to service his logging camps on Moosehead Lake. Initially, Katahdin was used to transport mail, cargo, and passengers, as well as to tow log rafts.
Today, the steamboat has been converted for tourist cruises and conducts excursions around the lake during the warm season. In good weather, it can be spotted on the water surface from the resort terrace — the white hull and distinctive smokestack stand out against the dark water.
Fishing on Moosehead Lake
Moosehead Lake is one of the best fishing spots in Maine. Its waters are home to lake trout, brook trout, landlocked salmon, and burbot. Notably, more than half of the brook trout caught in the lake exceed 16 inches (about 40 cm) in length — a true trophy for sport fishing enthusiasts.
People fish here both from the shore and from boats. The terrace area of The Birches Resort goes right to the water, so resort guests can cast a line directly from the dock. In winter, ice fishing is popular on the lake — during this season, the water surface is covered with a thick layer of ice.
How to Get to The Birches Resort
The Birches Resort is located at 281 Birches Road, Rockwood, Maine. From the town of Greenville, it is about a 30-minute drive north toward Rockwood. You can get there by car, boat, ATV, floatplane, or snowmobile — depending on the season.
Greenville is a small town on the southern shore of Moosehead Lake that serves as the gateway to the region. Tourist routes along the coast start here, as do roads to ski resorts and national forests. If you are planning a trip to the lake, Greenville will be a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area.
The Greenville and Moosehead Lake Area
The Greenville and Rockwood area is typical northern Maine: dense coniferous and mixed forests, numerous lakes and rivers, and a minimum of large cities. In winter, there is heavy snowfall, attracting snowboarders, skiers, and snowmobilers. In summer — fishing, hiking trails, boat trips, and swimming.
Moosehead Lake is surrounded by several small settlements, each catering to tourists. In addition to The Birches Resort, there are cottage communities, campgrounds, and boat launches along the shore. The infrastructure is focused on outdoor recreation — there are no noisy entertainments here, but there is silence, clean air, and landscapes that haven't changed for decades.
What You Can See on the Camera
The live camera is mounted on the open wooden terrace of The Birches Resort. In the frame are picnic tables and benches located right at the water's edge. Beyond the terrace, the water surface of Moosehead Lake is visible with a dock in the distance. Trees grow around the perimeter, and in clear weather, the silhouette of Mount Kineo can be seen in the background.
The broadcast is in real time, so on the camera you can watch how the lighting changes throughout the day, how boats pass on the lake, and sometimes — the historic steamboat Katahdin. In the warm season, resort guests appear on the terrace; in winter, everything is covered with snow and the lake surface freezes. This live webcam gives you the opportunity to see the shore of Moosehead Lake at any time of day and in any season — without having to travel to Maine.
