Elbe Embankment in Dresden — Online Webcam
Introduction: The Heart of the Saxon Capital
Dresden is a city where history breathes in every stone, and the Elbe River divides it into two worlds: old and new. The Elbe Embankment in Dresden is not just a promenade, but the heart of the city, offering one of the most impressive views of the Saxon capital. This online camera broadcasts a live panorama directly from the riverbank, allowing you to witness the grandeur of the architecture and the measured flow of the river in real time.
Balcony of Europe: The History of Brühl's Terrace
In the 16th century, this site was part of the city's military fortifications. However, in the 18th century, Count Heinrich von Brühl, the all-powerful minister of the Saxon elector, transformed the fortifications into an aristocratic promenade, building a palace, theater, and gallery here. From the early 19th century, the embankment earned its famous nickname. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was so enchanted by the ensemble that he called it the "Balcony of Europe." Today, Brühl's Terrace stretches approximately 500 meters between the Augustus Bridge and the Carola Bridge.
The Architectural Ensemble of the Embankment
From the high bank of the Elbe, a panorama of most architectural monuments unfolds. On the left bank, a large historical building in neoclassical style with a colonnade and dome is visible. Along the shore, there are piers and mooring facilities. After the bombings of 1945, the terrace was reconstructed. The sandstone buildings darkened over time but were restored, preserving their aristocratic appearance. From the terrace, you can see the Frauenkirche, Zwinger Palace, Semper Opera, and Hofkirche Cathedral.
The Dresden Elbe Valley and the UNESCO Scandal
The length of the Dresden Elbe Valley is approximately 18 kilometers. In 2004, this section was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, in 2006, the valley was placed on the list of endangered sites due to plans to build the Waldschlösschen Bridge. On June 25, 2009, UNESCO excluded Dresden from the World Heritage List. The decision was made at a meeting in Seville by 14 votes to 5, as the bridge disrupted the unity of the architectural and natural complex.
The Elbe River and Navigation
The Elbe is an important waterway. In the foreground, cruise ships with characteristic deck structures are often moored. Across the river stretches a long stone bridge with numerous arches — the Augustus Bridge, which carries automobile traffic. Along the shore, you can see lowered gangways and green plantings on the right bank, where the New Town is located.
