Einsiedeln webcam — live stream of the abbey online
History of the Abbey: from the hermit Meinrad to the present day
In the forested Swiss Alps, in the canton of Schwyz, lies one of the most significant Catholic centers in Europe — Einsiedeln Abbey. This webcam opens a view of the place where over a thousand years ago the hermit monk Meinrad founded a modest settlement. Einsiedeln Abbey was founded in 835 by the hermit monk Meinrad, who settled in the woods with a statue of the Black Madonna. The official founding date of the monastery is considered to be 934, when angels and Christ himself appeared to Bishop Conrad to consecrate the chapel. Pope Leo VIII proclaimed this apparition a miracle and blessed pilgrimage to Einsiedeln.
Architecture of the Benedictine Monastery
Einsiedeln Abbey is a male Benedictine monastery, the largest pilgrimage center in Switzerland. The territorial abbey of Einsiedeln is directly subject to the Holy See, which underscores its special status in the Catholic world. The monastery with four inner courtyards was built in Baroque style in the 18th century and represents a majestic architectural ensemble dominating the surrounding landscape.
The Miraculous Black Madonna
The main shrine of the abbey is the miraculous statue of the Black Madonna, attracting a quarter of a million believers annually. A quarter of a million believers visit Einsiedeln annually to venerate the Black Madonna. The miraculous statue burned in a fire in 1465 and in 1466 was replaced with a new wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus — a gift from the Zurich abbess Hildegard. The current Black Madonna statue is just over a meter tall, darkened by time and candle soot. Since the 17th century, the statue has been known as "Maria Einsiedeln" or the "Black Madonna." The Black Madonna is installed inside the dark "Chapel of Grace" (Gnadenkapelle) directly in the church, and sometimes it is dressed in precious garments sewn in the canton of Uri in the 18th century.
Canton of Schwyz and the Alpine Region
Einsiedeln is located in the canton of Schwyz and is a popular ski resort in the Mythenregion. The Tara River Canyon with panoramic peak Čurevac (1626 m) and the village of Tepta is located in Montenegro (Durmitor National Park), not in Switzerland. In Swiss Einsiedeln there is a Tara River and a village of Tepta, which can only be reached by jeep or quad bike, but it is not a panoramic resort. The canton of Schwyz offers the Schwyz Guest Card, providing discounts on cable cars, museums, and excursions in the region. Among the attractions of the canton of Schwyz are Fronalpstock, hiking trails, and the Mythenregion.
Nature and Forest Lands
The abbey owns extensive forest territories — Einsiedeln owns 1,058 hectares of forest cared for by ten monks. These wooded slopes create a picturesque backdrop for the monastery buildings and attract hiking enthusiasts. Einsiedeln is an important stop on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago), making it significant not only for pilgrims to the Black Madonna but also for travelers on one of Europe's most famous routes.
