Ilovlya — a settlement with history on the banks of the Ilovlya River
Ilovlya is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Ilovlinsky District in Volgograd Oblast, located approximately 70–80 km northwest of Volgograd. The first mentions of the settlement on the Ilovlya River date back to 1672, when Cossacks were allocated land for creating khutors (farmsteads). Originally, the settlement was called Ilovlinskaya stanitsa and was part of the 2nd Don Okrug with Novocherkassk as the regional capital.
An interesting feature of Ilovlya is that it has changed its location more than once. Until the mid-19th century, the stanitsa stretched along the river in a narrow strip and consisted of two parts separated by a huge vacant lot. Today, it is a modern district center with developed infrastructure, surrounded by unique natural landscapes.
Budyonnogo Street — the main artery of the district center
Budyonnogo Street is the central thoroughfare of Ilovlya, formerly known as Bolshaya Street. During the Soviet period, it was renamed in honor of Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny — the legendary Marshal of the Soviet Union and commander of the First Cavalry Army. Budyonny not only distinguished himself on the battlefield but also founded horse breeding farms, developing the "Budyonnovskaya" and "Terskaya" horse breeds that are still bred today.
Today, Budyonnogo Street remains the main street of the district center, concentrating key infrastructure around itself: from shops and cafes to administrative buildings and cultural institutions.
House No. 34 on Budyonnogo Street
At 34 Budyonnogo Street stands a panel residential building constructed in 1982. It is located in the central part of the settlement, with windows overlooking a green zone. Within walking distance from the house are a clinic, shops, a kindergarten, schools, pharmacies, and cafes — everything needed for everyday life.
Next to the house is a bus stop in the center of Ilovlya, providing convenient transport connections. Budyonnogo Street intersects with Lenin Street, where the district administration is located, making this location a convenient vantage point for observing the life of the district center.
Don-skoy Nature Park — the jewel of Ilovlinsky District
Ilovlya is famous not only for its history but also for its unique nature. Ilovlinsky District is home to the Don-skoy Nature Park, which began operations in 2001. This is a true jewel of Volgograd Oblast, featuring landscapes found nowhere else in the European part of Russia.
The park's main attraction is the highest chalk mountains in Europe, cut through by deep ravine-canyons. The width of the Don River valley here reaches 8 km, and the floodplain meadows, riparian and upland forests create a unique landscape. In the park, you can find remnants of ancient sanctuaries, monastic hermitages, and nomadic burial mounds.
Special attention deserves the Devil's Valley — a ritual site in Ilovlinsky District. In April, the Afghan tulip, lady's slipper orchid, fritillary, and meadow pasqueflower bloom here. The whitish rocks, formed millions of years ago, create the atmosphere of a true wild corner of nature.
Local History Museum and Cultural Heritage
On Budyonnogo Street is the Ilovlya Local History Museum, housed in a historic building with a lower and upper section, built in 1911. The museum holds detailed information on the history of the settlement and the entire Ilovlinsky District — from Cossack times to the present day.
Another significant landmark is the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, an Orthodox church that adorns the settlement. For outdoor enthusiasts, recreation bases on the banks of the Don and Ilovlya rivers offer rafting and kayaking trips.
Geographical Location and Transport
Ilovlya is situated along the Ilovlinskaya Upland, and the strategically important Volga-Don Canal passes through the town, connecting two great Russian rivers. The Ilovlya River — a tributary of the Don — plays an important role in the life of the region, shaping its landscape and providing water resources.
The convenient transport location makes Ilovlya accessible to tourists who come here for the Don-skoy Nature Park, the chalk cliffs along the Ilovlya River, and the peaceful atmosphere of a provincial district center.
