Schulau Harbor in Wedel — live webcam
Schulau Harbor — a historic port on the Elbe
Schulau Harbor is located in the town of Wedel on the right bank of the Elbe, approximately 20 kilometers west of Hamburg city center. This is one of those places where the history of the river and maritime affairs can be felt at every step. The live camera offers a view of the historic harbor with its pier extending into the water, cobblestone promenade, and lanterns along the railings. Cargo barges pass along the river, and a wooded strip is visible on the far bank — a typical landscape of the lower Elbe.
Wedel is often called "the city with a view of the Elbe," and Schulau Harbor is the best proof of that. It is a place where a commercial river meets the everyday life of a small town that has preserved its identity despite its proximity to a metropolis.
Harbor history: from fishing village to commercial port
Schulau was originally a fishing village. In 1855, 204 people lived here, most of whom worked as ship carpenters and sailors — the location directly on the Elbe determined the occupations of the local residents. In 1892, the neighboring village of Spitzendorff was incorporated into the Schulau community, expanding the settlement's territory.
With the development of industry in the region, the harbor became an important transshipment point for goods and passengers. The Elbe is one of Europe's key waterways, and the Port of Hamburg downstream is Germany's largest seaport. Schulau Harbor served as an auxiliary harbor for river navigation, accommodating both cargo and passenger vessels.
In recent years, a large-scale reconstruction of the harbor has been carried out as part of the "Maritime Meile" (Maritime Mile) project, which is transforming the waterfront into a modern urban space with a focus on the river. This is not just a renovation — it is a reimagining of how a city interacts with water.
Willkomm-Höft: the welcome pier on the Elbe
One of the unique attractions near the harbor is the welcome pier Willkomm-Höft. This is the only place in the world where ships are welcomed by raising a flag and sounding a horn. The tradition has been in effect since 1952 — the 60th anniversary of the pier was celebrated in 2012.
When a ship arrives or departs, the flag of the vessel's country of registration is raised, and a horn melody sounds — either a welcome or a farewell. For large liners and historic vessels, the ceremony is particularly solemn. Thousands of tourists come to Wedel every year specifically to witness this ceremony.
Willkomm-Höft is located in close proximity to Schulau Harbor, and from the waterfront you can watch the passing ships that will soon receive their welcome at the pier.
Schulauer Fährhaus: historic ferry harbor building
Schulauer Fährhaus is a historic ferry harbor building constructed in the early 20th century. Today it is a popular restaurant and event venue with a panoramic view of the Elbe. The restaurant terrace extends right to the water, offering a view of passing ships, the far bank with forests, and the harbor itself.
The building has been reconstructed and now combines historic architecture with modern design. The menu focuses on dishes made from fresh fish and seafood — logical for a place where the river meets the sea. It is one of those places where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch the life of the Elbe.
Maritime Meile: the new waterfront
The Maritime Meile project is a large-scale transformation of the Schulau Harbor waterfront. The landscaped promenade with recreation areas, panoramic terraces, and beach zones is turning a former industrial port into a public space. The project was implemented by the landscape architecture firm WES LandscapeArchitecture.
The promenade is paved with cobblestones, with lanterns and railings installed along it — all visible on the live camera. Recreation areas are positioned so that visitors can watch ship traffic on the Elbe. This is a space for walks, morning jogs, and evening sunsets over the river.
Geographical location and transport accessibility
Schulau Harbor is located on the right (northern) bank of the Elbe in the town of Wedel, Schleswig-Holstein. Coordinates are approximately 53.58°N, 9.70°E. It is situated downstream from the Port of Hamburg, in an area where the Elbe has already widened significantly and takes on an estuarine character.
You can get here from Hamburg by S-Bahn (line S1) to Wedel station — about 30 minutes. By car — via the B431 federal road or the A23 autobahn. There are also ferry crossings connecting Wedel with other towns on the Elbe.
The town of Wedel is administratively part of the Pinneberg district, but in atmosphere it is an independent place with a pronounced "Elbe" identity. There is no metropolitan hustle here, but there is the expanse of the river and a sense of connection to maritime history.
What to see near the harbor
In addition to the harbor itself and Willkomm-Höft, there are several noteworthy places in Wedel:
St. Johannis Church — a historic church in the center of Wedel, one of the oldest Protestant churches in the region.
Strandbad Wedel — a public bathing beach on the Elbe, popular in the summer months.
Wedel Botanical Garden — one of the oldest botanical gardens in Germany, founded in the 19th century.
Scharhörn Island — a nature reserve at the mouth of the Elbe, accessible by excursion boat. A nesting site for seabirds and seals.
Within a radius of 10–15 kilometers is the town of Pinneberg — the administrative center of the district with its own history and architecture.
The Elbe as a trade artery
The Elbe is one of the most important rivers in Europe, connecting the Czech Republic with the North Sea. The Port of Hamburg, located downstream, is the third-largest seaport in Europe after Rotterdam and Antwerp. Schulau Harbor is within the zone of this powerful logistics flow.
Not only sea vessels travel along the Elbe, but also river cargo barges — exactly the kind you can see on the live camera. River transport remains economically viable for bulk cargo: coal, ore, construction materials, and containers. The Elbe is navigable almost along its entire length from Ústí nad Labem to the sea.
For an observer on the Schulau Harbor waterfront, this means constant movement on the water — from small pleasure yachts to large cargo convoys. Every vessel is part of a global trade chain passing through this river.
Practical information for visitors
The best time to visit Schulau Harbor is from May to September, when the weather allows for comfortable stays on the open waterfront. However, the harbor also has its charm in winter: low gray skies, fog over the water, rare passersby — the atmosphere of a northern port city.
Entry to the harbor and waterfront is free. Parking spaces are available near the harbor. The Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant is open daily, but during the high season it is better to book a table on the terrace in advance.
Ship welcome ceremonies at Willkomm-Höft take place throughout the day — the schedule depends on ship traffic on the Elbe. Information about large vessels can be found on the welcome pier's website.
For those who cannot visit in person, a live webcam is available — it broadcasts a view of Schulau Harbor around the clock.
What the camera shows
The camera is positioned with a view of the historic Schulau Harbor on the Elbe River. In the frame is the waterfront with a pier extending into the water, paved with cobblestones. Lanterns and railings are installed along the waterfront. Cargo barges and other vessels move along the river — the Elbe is actively used for navigation here.
Along the right bank is a row of tall trees, behind which the urban development is hidden. A wooded strip is visible on the far bank — a typical landscape of the lower Elbe. In the left part of the frame there is partial shading covering part of the image — this is a feature of the camera installation.
The live camera transmits images in real time, allowing you to observe the life of Schulau Harbor from anywhere in the world. Ship traffic, changing lighting throughout the day, weather conditions — all this can be seen without leaving home.
