Historic Symbol of Martha's Vineyard
Edgartown is one of the most picturesque towns on Martha's Vineyard, and its harbor with the snow-white lighthouse has become a true landmark of the place. The first European settlement on the island was founded in 1642 by Thomas Mayhew and was called Great Harbor. It was not until 1671 that the town was officially incorporated under the name Edgartown. The Edgartown Harbor Light appeared much later — it was built in 1828 and became the first lighthouse at the harbor entrance, as well as the first of five lighthouses on Martha's Vineyard. Today it is more than just a navigational aid — it is a vital historic landmark marking the entrance not only to Edgartown Harbor but also to Katama Bay.
Architecture and the Lighthouse Rescue
Originally, the lighthouse was a unique structure for America — a two-story wooden Cape Cod-style house that also served as the keeper's residence. The lantern was housed in a glass room projecting from the center of the residence's steep gable roof. However, nature had its say: due to foundation erosion from waves and surf in 1844, the lighthouse had to be moved to its current location. Then in 1856, a new tower was built, equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens. The modern lighthouse stands approximately 54 feet (about 16.5 m) tall, and its white light is visible from about 14 miles away. In the 1980s, the U.S. Coast Guard planned to demolish the historic structure, replacing it with a standard skeleton tower, but the lighthouse was saved thanks to the efforts of the local community, making it a symbol of the fight to preserve the island's historic heritage.
Edgartown Harbor: From Whaling to Yachting
In the past, Edgartown was a major whaling port, but today its waters serve entirely different purposes. The harbor is filled with luxury sailboats and motor yachts, many of which are moored in the marinas on the left. It is a favorite destination for sailors and tourists who appreciate a tranquil maritime atmosphere.
