Friendship Bridge in Foz do Iguaçu — Live Webcam Online
Friendship Bridge: Where Two Countries Meet
In southwestern Brazil, in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, one of the busiest border bridges in South America spans the Iguaçu River. This live webcam shows the Friendship Bridge — an artery through which tens of thousands of people and trucks pass every day. The camera is positioned so that both the Brazilian and Paraguayan riverbanks, as well as the Iguaçu River itself, are visible in the frame.
How the Bridge That Changed the Region's Economy Was Built
Construction of this giant began in February 1961 and took four years. The project was designed by Brazilian engineer Emerson Ribeiro Gomes, and the construction was carried out by the company Camargo Corrêa. The initiative came from two presidents — Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco of Brazil and Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay. The grand opening took place on March 27, 1965. At that time, the Paraguayan bank was known as Puerto Stroessner, and in 1989 the city was renamed Ciudad del Este. The bridge became part of Brazil's "National Integration" policy, aimed at developing western territories and strengthening ties with neighboring countries.
Trade Flow: Why the Bridge Is Called Paraguay's Main Artery
For Paraguay — a landlocked country — this bridge is of strategic importance. Approximately 60–70% of all Paraguayan imports and exports pass through it. Ciudad del Este on the opposite bank is the largest duty-free trade zone in Latin America. Brazilians cross the bridge en masse to buy electronics, alcohol, cigarettes, and perfumes at prices significantly below domestic market rates. Dozens of trucks cross the bridge daily, delivering goods both to Brazil's domestic market and for export through the port of Paranaguá. Trade across the bridge accounts for a significant portion of Paraguay's GDP and forms the backbone of the border cities' economies.
Architecture and Technical Specifications
The Friendship Bridge is a cable-stayed arch structure with a length of 552.4 meters and a width of 16.5 meters. The arch height above the Iguaçu River is approximately 65–70 meters. At the time of its opening in 1965, it was one of the largest arch bridges in the world. Two traffic lanes and sidewalks on both sides create a dense flow that is clearly visible on the camera. The bridge's capacity has long been exhausted, so serious traffic jams form during peak hours.
Border Control: How the Border Works on the Bridge
Border control on the bridge is split. First, travelers pass exit controls from one country, then cross the bridge on foot or by vehicle, and only then pass entry controls into the other country. On the Brazilian side in Foz do Iguaçu, the Federal Police and the Federal Revenue Service operate. On the Paraguayan side — the migration service and customs of Paraguay. Citizens of MERCOSUR countries can cross the border using only their national ID card, without a passport. When returning from Paraguay, duty-free import of goods up to 500 US dollars is allowed. Above the limit — a 50% tax. There are strict restrictions on cigarettes and alcohol: no more than 10 packs of cigarettes per person.
Everyday Life: From Trade to Smuggling
The daily passenger flow across the bridge is approximately 40–60 thousand people, and on holidays it can exceed 100 thousand. The bridge earned the unofficial nickname "Smugglers' Bridge" due to the scale of illegal goods being brought into Brazil. Despite heightened controls, the flow of people hauling bags and boxes never stops. The live camera captures this bustle — pedestrians with carts, taxi drivers offering their services, and an endless stream of vehicles.
What the Camera Shows
This live webcam shows the Friendship Bridge in Foz do Iguaçu from an angle that allows you to appreciate the scale of the border crossing. In the frame — a dense flow of cars and pedestrians, traffic along the two lanes of the bridge, the arch structure from the inside. The camera offers a view of the Iguaçu River from above, as well as the border between the two cities: the skyscrapers of Ciudad del Este and the lower-rise buildings of Foz do Iguaçu. In good weather, plumes of mist from the Iguazu Falls can be seen in the distance — the bridge is located near the confluence of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers. The camera also captures the operation of border checkpoints and possible traffic jams at exits and entries. The live stream operates around the clock, allowing you to observe border life at any time of day.
