Near the cathedral is St. Brigid's Well. According to folk beliefs, the water from this well has healing properties, especially for eye diseases. Traditionally, pilgrims came here on February 1 — the feast day of St. Brigid. Dunleer Motte: Traces of the Norman Conquest

However, the peaceful course of life was often interrupted by wars. In 1315, during the First War of Scottish Independence, the town was burned by the troops of Edward Bruce — brother of the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. Edward invaded Ireland, proclaiming himself king, and his troops devastated many towns on the eastern coast. Dunleer was burned to the ground but was subsequently rebuilt.
In 1689, near the town, the Battle of Ballybar took place between the Jacobites and supporters of William of Orange. This was one of many clashes in the Jacobite wars that determined the political future of Ireland. Although the battle was not decisive, it left a mark on local memory and toponymy — the name Ballybar still recalls those events.

Today Dunleer is a typical Irish town with a population of about 1,800 people. It is located in County Louth, about 10 kilometers southwest of Dundalk and 70 kilometers north of Dublin.
