Fiesa Bay, Piran — Online Webcam with Adriatic View
Fiesa Bay — a hidden gem of the Slovenian Adriatic
On the southwestern coast of Slovenia, between the ancient town of Piran and the quiet Strunjan, lies Fiesa Bay — a place where the Adriatic Sea meets unique freshwater and brackish lakes. This live webcam offers a view of one of the most scenic spots in the region, where turquoise water is surrounded by pine forests and flysch cliffs. Fiesa Bay in Piran is the perfect spot for those who want to observe a peaceful coastal landscape without the hustle and bustle of the city.
Origin of the name: a bend in the coastline
The name "Fiesa" has Italian roots — it comes from the old Italian adjective fiesso, meaning "twisted, curved", derived from the Latin flexus. This directly points to the distinctive bend in the coastline that forms the cozy bay. Historically, these lands were under the influence of the Venetian Republic, which is why many place names in the region have retained their Italian sound.
Unique ecosystem: Slovenia's only brackish lake
The bay's main natural attraction is two lakes located right at the shore. The smaller freshwater lake reaches a depth of 6.5 meters, while the larger one has been connected to the sea since 1963 and became brackish. This is Slovenia's only brackish lake, making it a unique site for studying transitional ecosystems. Since 1989, the area of 2.1 hectares has been protected as a natural monument.
Algae research in the lake has identified 141 species, including rare and scientifically new forms. The brackish environment provides a refuge for organisms found in neither freshwater nor marine waters. In 2024, scientists published a study on the heterobranch fauna of the bay, and since 2007, the invasive species Bursatella leachi has been regularly recorded here.
Strunjan Nature Park: geological wonders of the coast
Fiesa Bay is part of the Strunjan Nature Park — the largest protected natural area on the Slovenian coast. Here you can observe tall cliffs, layers of rock that waves and wind have shaped over millennia. The flysch slopes, covered with dense pine forests, descend right to the water, creating the very Mediterranean landscape that tourists value so much in this region.
Active recreation: from SUP boarding to diving
The calm waters of the bay are protected from strong waves, making it ideal for water sports. Fiesa Beach is a spot with warm, clear water, popular with families with children and SUP boarding enthusiasts. A few meters from the lake, there is a diving center, and nearby there is a campsite for those who want to stay closer to nature. The bay is located about 3 kilometers from Portorož, so you can reach it both by car and on foot.
Walking trail between Piran and Strunjan
One of the best ways to explore the coast is to walk along the Fiesa-Piran walking trail. The coastal route connects two historic towns, passing by the bay. The trail is suitable for all fitness levels and offers views of the Adriatic, rocky cliffs, and green slopes. From Piran, the path to the bay leads past the old cemetery, and from Strunjan you can reach it through the village of Pakug.
Piran: a Venetian town on a cliff
A few kilometers from the bay lies Piran — one of the most atmospheric towns in Slovenia. Its main square, Tartini Square, is named after the famous violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, who was born here in 1692. On the hill stands the Church of St. George with its bell tower, offering a panorama of the entire bay. Narrow medieval streets, terracotta roofs, and views of the Adriatic make Piran a must-visit destination in this region.
