Zeewolde Wind Farm: Wind Energy in the Heart of Flevoland
The Zeewolde wind farm is not just a collection of turbines on the plains of the Netherlands. It is the world's largest locally managed onshore wind farm, owned by more than 200 local farmers, residents, and entrepreneurs. Located in the municipality of Zeewolde in the province of Flevoland, this wind farm has become a symbol of how renewable energy can be integrated into the everyday life of rural communities.
The Zeewolde webcam opens up a view of this unique landscape — endless fields intersected by roads, and neat rows of wind turbines stretching to the horizon. The camera is mounted on one of the turbines, offering a bird's-eye view of the surroundings.
Technical Scale of the Project
The power station consists of 83 Vestas wind turbines of four types: V136, V126, V117, and V110. This is a repowering project, in which 220 old turbines gave way to 83 new, significantly more powerful ones. The turbines are arranged in six linear configurations, optimizing wind flow capture over the flat plains of Flevoland.
The total area occupied by the wind farm exceeds 300 km². Moreover, more than 90% of turbine owners are shareholders in the project — these are farming families, local residents, and entrepreneurs for whom the wind turbines have become not only a source of energy but also a stable income.
The station's capacity allows it to supply renewable electricity to approximately 300,000 households. This is comparable to the consumption of an entire city — and all this energy is harnessed from the wind blowing over the Dutch plains.
Geographic Location: Flevoland and Surroundings
Zeewolde is located in the province of Flevoland — the youngest province of the Netherlands, created on reclaimed land taken from the sea. This is a unique region where virtually every meter of land was created by humans — and today agriculture, modern infrastructure, and renewable energy coexist here.
Near Zeewolde runs the A6 motorway, connecting the eastern regions of the country with the Amsterdam metropolitan area. From the wind turbine camera, this busy transport corridor is clearly visible, with a continuous flow of cars moving along it. The frame also shows Reigerplas lake and, in the distance, the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve, famous for its wildlife.
Agricultural Landscape Beneath the Turbines
One of the unique features of the Zeewolde wind farm is the complete coexistence of wind power generation and agriculture. The project includes more than 1,200 land plots owned by farming families. Potatoes, onions, sugar beets, and wheat continue to be cultivated beneath and between the turbines.
From the height provided by the webcam, this mosaic of fields is clearly visible — green, brown, and beige rectangles divided by roads and hedgerows of trees. This is a classic Dutch rural landscape, where every patch of land is used as efficiently as possible.

The Zeewolde online camera broadcasts not only a visual picture but also real-time technical data of the turbine's operation. In the upper right corner of the screen, the following are displayed:

— Rotor and generator revolutions per minute (RPM)
— Air temperature
— Accumulated energy
This data allows real-time observation of how energy generation changes depending on wind conditions. In calm weather, the turbines may stop, while in strong winds they can reach peak power. Sometimes you can even see negative generation values — these are moments when the turbine consumes energy from the grid for its own needs.
A6 Highway and Transport Infrastructure
The A6 motorway visible on the camera is one of the key transport arteries of the Netherlands. It connects Zeewolde with Almere, Lelystad, and further — with Amsterdam to the west and the cities of Overijssel to the east. In good weather, a continuous flow of traffic can be observed from the camera, contrasting with the leisurely rotation of the wind turbine blades.
In addition to the A6, regional roads run through the Zeewolde area, providing access to farms and the turbines themselves. Along the roads, characteristic Dutch drainage ditches are visible — an integral part of the landscape of Flevoland's reclaimed territories.
Oostvaardersplassen Nature Reserve on the Horizon
In the background of the Zeewolde webcam, if you look closely, you can make out the outlines of the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve — one of the most famous nature reserves in the Netherlands. This is a wilderness area inhabited by rare bird species, deer, and other animals. The reserve is located on reclaimed land and serves as an example of how nature self-restores on territories taken from the sea.

History of Wind Energy Development in Zeewolde
The Zeewolde wind farm is the result of many years of development. The first wind turbines in this area appeared back in the 1980s, and since then the region has become one of the centers of Dutch wind energy. The repowering project of the 2020s replaced outdated low-power turbines with modern, highly efficient installations.
The uniqueness of the project lies in its local ownership. Unlike many large wind farms owned by energy corporations, Windpark Zeewolde is managed by the residents of the region themselves. This means that the profits from energy sales remain in the local economy, supporting the development of communities and infrastructure.

The Zeewolde online camera operates around the clock, allowing you to observe the life of the wind farm and the surrounding landscape at any time of day. At night, you can see the warning lights of the turbines, flashing red against the dark sky — this is a mandatory aviation safety requirement for all tall structures.
