Lomnický štít — the second highest peak in Slovakia

Lomnický štít is one of the main peaks of the High Tatras, with an elevation of 2,634 m above sea level. It is the country's second highest point after Gerlachovský štít. The peak's name comes from the town of Tatranská Lomnica at its foot, and the word "štít" translates from Slovak as "shield," "peak," or "summit."

The first documented ascent of the peak was made by English traveler Robert Townson in 1793. He measured the peak's height as 2,633 meters — just 1 meter less than the actual height determined by modern methods. The original summit of Lomnický štít was a narrow stone spire about 8 m high and about 2 m wide, which was lost during the construction of the modern cable car station.

History of the Tatranská Lomnica ski resort

Tatranská Lomnica has evolved from a shepherd's village to the largest ski resort in Slovakia. Tourism development here began in the late 19th century when the first travelers appreciated the beauty of these places. Today, the resort offers modern infrastructure: lifts, hotels, restaurants, and groomed runs of varying difficulty.

The ski season in Tatranská Lomnica lasts from November to May thanks to its high-altitude location and snowmaking system. The resort is part of the unified Vysoké Tatry ski area together with Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and other centers, allowing skiers and snowboarders to move between resorts with a single ski pass.

Cable car to Lomnický štít

The cable car from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté Pleso consists of two sections. The first is a 4-seater cable car from the valley (903 m) to the intermediate station Štart. The second is a 15-seater gondola from Štart to Skalnaté Pleso (1,772 m). From Skalnaté Pleso to the very summit of Lomnický štít (2,634 m), a separate cable car operates.

The construction of the cable car to Lomnický štít was an engineering feat: construction materials were carried by people from neighboring villages, as the use of machinery at such altitude was impossible. The cable car operates daily, but in adverse weather conditions — strong winds, low visibility, or thunderstorms — the ascent may be suspended.

Skalnaté Pleso — the rocky mountain lake

Skalnaté Pleso is a mountain lake at an altitude of 1,751 m, whose name translates as "Rocky Mountain Lake." It is a popular tourist attraction and a transfer point on the way to Lomnický štít. The lake is smaller than it appears on tourist maps, but its picturesque location among rocks and mountain peaks makes it one of the most photographed places in the High Tatras.

You can reach Skalnaté Pleso by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica or on foot along mountain trails. It is the terminal of an 8-seater gondola and the starting point for the further ascent to Lomnický štít. In good weather, a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the valley opens from the lake shore.

Weather conditions and visibility at the summit

At the summit of Lomnický štít, there is a meteorological observatory that conducts continuous weather observations. Initially, in the late 1930s, it was planned to place the observatory at Skalnaté Pleso, but eventually the station was built at the very summit. Weather conditions at 2,634 m differ significantly from the valley: temperatures are lower, winds are stronger, and clouds often cover the summit.

Tourists ascending Lomnický štít risk encountering dense cloud cover — on such days, visibility is limited to a few meters, and the panoramic view from the summit is unavailable. That is why it is recommended to check the weather forecast and visibility at the summit before ascending. Seasonal features: winter and summer

Tatranská Lomnica offers different opportunities depending on the season. In winter, the resort turns into a ski sports center: runs are covered with snow, lifts operate, and the landscape features snow-covered mountain peaks and coniferous forests. In summer, snow melts from the lower slopes, revealing green meadows and mountain trails. The cable car continues to operate, delivering tourists to the summit for hiking and mountaineering climbs.
