History of the Central Square

The square formed around the railway junction, which determined the appearance of Slyudyanka for centuries to come. One of the oldest buildings in the center remains the water tower built by exiled Poles in 1900. It supplied water to the railway junction and still stands as a silent witness to the era. Red brick on a granite foundation, Art Nouveau style with Neo-Gothic elements — according to legend, the facade decoration contains a message from the captive builders.

In Soviet times, the space was landscaped, giving it the appearance of a typical provincial square: straight paths, benches, green zones. But the railway soul of the city has not gone anywhere — it can be read in every object around.

Monuments and Attractions

The Central Square of Slyudyanka is an open-air museum of railway history. Here stands the L-3504 "Lebedyanka" memorial locomotive, built in 1954 at the Voroshilovgrad plant. The machine was placed on a pedestal in 2009 in memory of railway warriors. Notably, the locomotive was moved along Sovetskaya Street, relaying the tracks — a sight that probably impressed the locals.

Nearby rises the monument to V.I. Lenin, opened on November 6, 2016, on the 99th anniversary of the October Revolution. The height of the monument is about five meters, the author is local sculptor Andrey Mikhailov.

Opposite each other are two key buildings: the Palace of Culture of Railway Workers, built in 1938, and the district administration. The Palace of Culture underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2009 and remains the center of the city's cultural life.

Architectural Appearance and Surroundings

The square is framed by two- and three-story buildings — residential houses and commercial properties typical of a Siberian town with a population of about 18,000 people. The architecture is predominantly from the Soviet period, but there are also pre-revolutionary inclusions. In the background, forested mountains are visible — the ranges of the Olkhin Plateau, descending to Lake Baikal.

The green zone along the road and on the square itself creates a sense of coziness, despite the intensive traffic. Young trees, shrubs, lawns — all this is maintained in order by municipal services.

Transport Accessibility

Slyudyanka is located at the 123rd kilometer of the Circum-Baikal Railway and on the R-258 "Baikal" highway. You can reach the Central Square by road from Irkutsk (about 110 km) or by electric train from Irkutsk station. The bus station is located directly on the square — although instead of a building, there is only a dispatch point with schedules here.

Seasonal Features

In winter, the Central Square is transformed: the snow cover hides the lawns, the trees stand bare, and the forested mountains in the background merge with the sky into a single gray-white picture. Lighting in the dark — street lamps and facade lighting — creates an intimate atmosphere.

In summer, the square turns green, passers-by rest on benches, and the traffic becomes more lively thanks to tourists heading to Lake Baikal. On holidays, city events are held here — concerts, fairs, and folk festivals.
