Circum-Baikal Railway and the Birth of the City

Slyudyanka gained its significance as a railway hub after the completion of the Trans-Siberian section from Irkutsk to Slyudyanka-II station. It is here, on the shores of Lake Baikal, that the legendary Circum-Baikal Railway begins — an engineering feat of the early 20th century that required the construction of 38 tunnels and 248 bridges on a stretch just 84 kilometers long. The water tower, built in 1911–1913 (according to other sources — in 1914–1915) during the construction of the CBR, became a symbol of this era. The structure was built according to an individual design and remains the only such structure along the entire length of the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 1980, the tower was placed under state protection as a cultural heritage site (architectural monument) by decision of the regional executive committee No. 294 dated June 24.

Rising above the square, the water tower draws attention with its proportions and early 20th-century brickwork. Locomotive "Lebedyanka" and Monuments to Railway Workers

In 2009, a locomotive monument L-3504 was installed next to the water tower, known as "Lebedyanka." This locomotive, along with a water column for refueling and a semaphore, became a tribute to the railway workers who labored in the harshest conditions during the construction and operation of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The locomotive is not just an open-air exhibit — it is a reminder that Slyudyanka was and remains a city of railway workers. The locomotive is mounted on a pedestal accessible for viewing and photography.

Palace of Culture of Railway Workers

The dominant feature of the square is the Palace of Culture of Railway Workers, built in 1938. The building underwent comprehensive restoration in 2009, and in 2013 a modern cinema opened within its walls. The Palace of Culture remains the main venue for city events: New Year celebrations, theater and circus performances, and corporate events are held here. The architecture of the Palace reflects the Stalinist Empire style characteristic of public buildings of that era. The facade is adorned with stucco and columns, while original chandeliers and panels have been preserved inside.

Holidays and Festivals on the Square

Slyudyanka Central Square is the venue for the city's largest events. Every year on June 10, Russia Day, the "Power of Baikal" strength sports festival takes place here. In 2024, 165 athletes aged 11 to 62 participated in the competitions. The square also becomes a stage for concerts, fairs, and folk festivals that bring together residents and guests of the city. In winter, the main city Christmas tree is erected here, and in summer, folk art festivals are held.

Modern Slyudyanka is a city with a population of about 18,000 people, located on the southern shore of Lake Baikal. The city maintains its identity as a railway hub and gateway to the Circum-Baikal Railway.
