History of Khodovaya Street — From Sibirskaya to the Name of a Pioneer Builder
The name of this street is inextricably linked with the history of Bratsk itself. Originally it bore the name Sibirskaya — a typical name for a developing city, reflecting its geographical location. But in 1997, the year of the death of an outstanding builder, the street was named after Igor Petrovich Khodonov — a pioneer builder of Bratsk who arrived in the city in 1955 after graduating from the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute. Khodonov worked for more than 30 years within the Bratskgesstroy system, and colleagues called him the «load-bearing wall» for his invaluable contribution to the construction of the Energetik district. A merited builder, he dedicated his life to creating a city that today is one of the largest industrial centers of Irkutsk Oblast.
Geography and Location — Bratsk, Angara, and the Reservoir
Bratsk occupies a unique position on the map of Eastern Siberia. The city stretches along the shore of the Bratsk Reservoir, formed by the Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station dam on the Angara River. It is one of the largest artificial bodies of water in the world, and its surface is visible from many points of the city. Khodovaya Street is located in the Padunsky District, which together with the Energetik district makes up the western part of Bratsk. The city is divided by forested areas and water expanses, creating a characteristic landscape — residential quarters alternate with sections of taiga and coastal zones. The wide river with the opposite bank covered in trees forms a panorama that can be observed in this part of the city.
Energetik District — The Heart of the Padun Part of the City
Khodovaya Street is the central and one of the longest streets of the Energetik residential district. This area originated as a settlement of Bratsk HPP builders and has retained its specific character to this day. Energetik is located in close proximity to one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in Russia, which shapes both its infrastructure and atmosphere. The district is considered environmentally favorable — the absence of large industrial enterprises in the residential zone and the proximity of the reservoir create comfortable living conditions. Panel high-rise buildings erected during the period of active construction still define the architectural appearance of the area.
Infrastructure of Khodovaya Street
Khodovaya Street concentrates all the infrastructure necessary for everyday life. There are residential buildings, including building No. 9, brick, built in 1965, with 72 apartments, as well as buildings No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5. Within walking distance there are schools and kindergartens, pharmacies and cafés. There is a «Bristol» store on the street (building No. 3), and the management company LLC «UK PURSEY» operates (building No. 4). The postal index of the street is 665709. Parking spaces are arranged in front of the buildings, which is typical for Soviet-era planning — cars are parked both in designated areas and along the roadway.
How to Get There — Public Transportation
Khodovaya Street is well integrated into Bratsk's transportation network. Bus route No. 12 passes through it, as well as route No. 55k «Bratsk – Energetik – Bratsk». Near building No. 5 there are 10 bus stops through which buses, minibuses, and commuter trains pass. Buses from Gidrostroitel run via the «HPP» stop on Primorskaya Street, then along Khodovaya and Naimushin streets to the «Solnechnaya» stop. This provides convenient transportation for residents and visitors to other parts of the city.
Seasonal Features of the District
Bratsk's climate is sharply continental, with a prolonged cold winter and a short warm summer. In winter, the streets of the Energetik district are covered with snow, trees stand bare, and the panorama of the Bratsk Reservoir changes — the river freezes, and ice covers its surface. In summer, the green plantings along Khodovaya Street create shade, balconies and loggias are decorated with flowers, and parking lots fill up with local residents' cars. In autumn and spring, the district experiences typical Siberian transitional periods — slush, ice, or the first warm days when residents take to the streets en masse. The web camera in real time allows observing these seasonal changes without the need to be physically present in Bratsk.
