Ussuriysk — a city born from the railway

Ussuriysk is one of those Far Eastern towns whose fate is inseparably linked with the Trans-Siberian Railway. Founded in 1866 as the village of Nikolskoye, it gained a new lease on life when construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began in 1891. It was the rails that transformed a modest village into a full-fledged town — on April 3, 1898, Nicholas II approved the decree establishing the town of Nikolsk-Ussuriysky. By that time, about 30,000 people lived here.

The railway workshops became the town-forming enterprise. In 1930, they were reorganized into a locomotive and car repair plant, and in 1974 — into the Ussuriysk Locomotive Repair Plant, which still operates today. The town changed its name several times: Nikolskoye, Nikolsk, Nikolsk-Ussuriysky, Voroshilov — and only since 1957 has it been called Ussuriysk.

Station building — an Art Nouveau architectural landmark

The heart of the station square is the railway station building, constructed in 1908–1910 to a design by architect V. A. Planson. It is the first Art Nouveau building in Ussuriysk and a significant early 20th-century architectural landmark. The first wooden station structure was erected as early as 1894, and in 1903 it was rebuilt — the central section received a second floor. In the 1930s, the building underwent another reconstruction but retained its distinctive appearance.

Monuments of the station square

The station square of Ussuriysk is more than just a transport hub — it is a true open-air memorial complex. Several monuments are installed here, each telling its own chapter of history.

The Em No. 3868 locomotive monument was installed on the eve of Railway Workers' Day at the station square. This locomotive is a tribute to the railway workers whose labor built the town.

The monument to Yerofey Pavlovich Khabarov stands in the center of the square, facing the station building. The famous explorer, in whose honor Khabarovsk is named, serves here as a reminder of the early days of Far Eastern exploration.

The obelisk commemorating the troops who participated in the construction of the Ussuri Railway is dedicated to the soldiers and officers who laid the mainline in harsh conditions.

The monument to the fighters for Soviet power was installed in 1977. A time capsule with a message to future generations was laid into its foundation.

The monument to locomotive drivers and workers who died during the Great Patriotic War is located near the railway station. Beneath the monument lies a capsule with a testament from descendants, which is planned to be opened in 2045 — 100 years after the end of the war.

The station square of Ussuriysk is a crossroads of eras. Here, passenger routes, freight lines, and city transport converge. A federal highway and a railway line linking Vladivostok with the rest of the country pass through Ussuriysk. The square is always bustling: taxis, buses, arriving and departing trains — all this creates the unique atmosphere of a border town.

Ussuriysk is situated in the Prikhanka Lowland, close to the border with China. It is the second-largest town in Primorsky Krai after Vladivostok. Its strategic location makes the railway junction key to the entire region.

For motorists, the M60 highway runs through the town, as well as regional roads connecting Ussuriysk with Vladivostok, Nakhodka, and the Chinese border.
