Aktau is a city on the edge of Kazakhstan, where the desert meets the Caspian Sea. It is the administrative center of the Mangystau Region, located on the Mangyshlak Peninsula. Unlike most cities in the country, Aktau does not have traditional street addressing — houses here are numbered by microdistricts, which is itself a unique feature of the urban environment. The population as of December 2024 stood at 292,666 people, and the city continues to grow thanks to its port and oil and gas industry.

Aktau is a port city, the only one in Kazakhstan capable of receiving seagoing vessels year-round. The Port of Aktau is located on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea and serves as the country's key transport hub for international shipments of crude oil, petroleum products, and dry cargo. It is through this port that a significant portion of Kazakhstan's export cargo passes along the Trans-Caspian route.

From Settlement to City: The History of Aktau

The history of Aktau begins in 1961, when the settlement of Aktuysky was founded on the Melovoy Cape. Already in 1963, it was granted city status and named Aktau, and in 1964 it was renamed Shevchenko — in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who was exiled to Mangyshlak in the mid-19th century. The historical name Aktau was returned to the city only in 1991, when the region also became known as Mangystau.

The emergence of a city in a waterless desert was made possible by the development of strategic deposits of uranium, oil, and gas. All infrastructure was built from scratch for life in extreme conditions — the city still relies entirely on desalinated seawater, making it a unique example of an engineering solution to the water supply problem in an arid region.

Geographic Location and Climate

Aktau is located in western Kazakhstan, on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. The city sits on the Mangystau Plateau, which is a plain that gradually slopes down to the sea. The climate here is sharply continental with desert features — in summer temperatures can exceed +40°C, and in winter, despite the proximity to the sea, frosts can reach -15°C.

The Caspian Sea has a significant impact on the urban environment. The water surface is visible from many panoramic points, and the breezes soften the summer heat. However, the shallowing of the Caspian in recent decades poses challenges for port infrastructure and requires constant dredging operations.

Port and Transport Hub

The Port of Aktau is not just a harbor, but a strategic facility of national importance. It is the only port in Kazakhstan designed for international shipments of various dry cargoes, crude oil, and petroleum products. The ferry crossing across the Caspian Sea "Alat — Aktau Port" is part of the international "Silk Road" project, linking Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and China.

The city's transport infrastructure includes multi-lane roads, interchanges, and roundabouts, all clearly visible from panoramic viewpoints. The city highway with an interchange is one of the central arteries of Aktau, connecting residential microdistricts with the business center and the port.

Architecture and Urban Environment

Aktau was built up during the Soviet era according to a single plan, and its architecture reflects typical design solutions from the 1960s–1980s. However, the city is actively developing — modern high-rise residential and commercial buildings are visible on the panoramas, some of which are under construction with tower cranes. The Aktau Embankment is one of the city's main attractions. It stretches for about 3 kilometers and features an amphitheater with a 70-meter stage, built for the 5th Summit of Heads of Caspian States. From the embankment, there is a view of the rocky coastline and the vast expanse of the Caspian Sea.
