How Mira Prospekt Came to Be
The history of this street began in the post-war years. By decision of the city executive committee No. 312 dated June 4, 1948, the section of the current avenue from the beginning to Orskoye Shosse was named Promyshlennosti Prospekt (Industry Avenue), and the stretch from Orskoye Shosse to what is now Komsomolskaya Square was called Kommunisticheskaya Street. Later, these names were merged into the unified Mira Prospekt.
In the 1950s, active construction began here, shaping the modern appearance of the thoroughfare. It was during this period that iconic buildings emerged, which today are recognized architectural landmarks.
Architectural Gems of the Avenue
Mira Prospekt is renowned for its architecture. On the odd-numbered side from Stanislavskogo Street to Komsomolskaya Square stand residential buildings from the 1950s in the neoclassical style. These structures, with their strict facades and stucco moldings, create a distinctive atmosphere of the Stalin era.
Particular attention deserves the building of Vocational School No. 1, constructed in 1951 based on an individual design by the Kharkov branch of Giprotyazhmash. This is a unique example of industrial architecture adapted for educational purposes.
The houses of the former Block No. 8 are now part of an urban planning monument and are protected by the state as a sample of typical mid-20th century development.
Hotel Ural — A Symbol of the Era
One of the main landmarks of the avenue is Hotel Ural, opened in March 1959. This building has long become the city's calling card and is recognized as an urban planning monument. In its time, it hosted guests from across the country, and today it continues to operate, preserving the spirit of its era.
Adjacent to the hotel is the Plaza business center, which was formerly the factory-kitchen of the Yuzhuralmash machine-building plant. The building was reconstructed and now serves as modern office space.
