The process of ice sculpture formation is linked to active aerosol condensation — spray and mist falling from the waterfall freeze instantly on vertical surfaces, creating fantastic ice forms and architectural compositions. Historically, there have been cases of large-scale freezing, when in 1912, 1848, and in the 2014–2015 season, water movement stopped due to ice jams, allowing people to walk along the riverbed when the flow ceased.
