History of Teatralny Park: From Nikolayevsky Garden to Modern Space

Teatralny Park in Astrakhan is a place with a rich history spanning over a century. It all began in 1896, when a garden named Nikolayevsky was laid out here to mark the centenary of Emperor Nicholas I. The initiative for creating the green zone came from the mayor I.N. Plotnikov, while the layout and landscaping were handled by gardener V.F. Baranov. About 15 thousand plants were planted in the park — a massive landscaping effort for that time.

In 1920, the park was renamed Narodny (People's), and from 1925 it bore the name of V.I. Lenin. During the Soviet era, attractions, a chess club, and a fountain appeared here — the park became a full-fledged recreation area for Astrakhan residents. In the 1970s, the area was actively improved: a new building replaced the wooden summer cinema.

Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theater: Architectural Dominant

The park's main attraction is the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theater. Its construction began in 2007 on the territory of the former Lenin Park. The project was developed by Moscow architect A.M. Bely, who won the competition for designing a music theater.

The building was constructed in pseudo-Russian style with Art Nouveau elements. The exterior features echoes of the bell towers and cathedrals of the Astrakhan Kremlin, as well as Moscow architectural masterpieces — the GUM and Historical Museum buildings. The grand opening of the theater took place in 2011 — the symphony orchestra conducted by maestro Gergiev performed Tchaikovsky's "Queen of Spades" for the first audience.

In 2012, the theater's leadership team was expanded: Konstantin Balakin became the chief director, and Konstantin Ural became the artistic director of the ballet. The southern part of the building houses the regional Ministry of Culture, making the theater not only a stage but also an administrative center.

In 2025, the park hosted the VI International Literary Festival for Children and Youth, which was attended by over 15 thousand people. The program included meetings with writers, book presentations, and creative workshops. In 2026, the festival will take place on May 22-24 — again in Teatralny Park.

Every year on May 24, the regional holiday "Glory to Our Glagol, Bright Word!" is held at the opera and ballet theater park, dedicated to the Day of Slavic Literature. In September, audiences can enjoy the concert "Renaissance of the Romance" — an evening of classical music under the open sky.

Adjacent to Teatralny Park is the Astrakhan Drama Theater — one of the oldest theaters in Russia. Its official founding date is considered to be December 12, 1810.
