Segozha — northern Karelia city

Segozha — one of those northern cities often seen in Murtmann train schedules but overshadowed by tourist routes. This place with its own destiny where railway history intertwines with industrial heritage. The city stands on the Vyg lake shore and its appearance was largely defined by the October Railway, once called Murmansk Railway. It was along its tracks that a settlement began growing at the beginning of the 20th century and later the city itself.

Segozha officially received city status in 1943 but by that time the Segozha pulp and paper mill was already operating, with its first phase launched in 1939. During the war the enterprise was reprofiled for mortar and mine production and by May 1943 returned to cellulose and kraft paper production. Since then the mill remains the city-forming enterprise and in recent years Segezha Group implements a large improvement program called "I Walk Through Segozha".

Mir Square — attraction centre

Mir Square is where the main streets of Segozha converge. Everything here follows Soviet planning logic: wide space, administrative buildings, House of Culture and railway station standing right on the square. South of the square begins the block of brick Stalins — once built for the elite of the mill, engineers and plant managers.

Public life of the city is concentrated at Mir Square. Holidays, concerts, fairs take place here. Monuments and memorials: generation memory

Mir Square is not just a transport hub but a memory place. Several monuments are installed here each telling its own story. Nearby stands "Warrior-Partisan" monument opened on January 1, 1961 at the expense of Segozha residents themselves. It is located in the park between Mir and Gagarin streets.

In July 2019 a monument to military nurses appeared on the square — dedicated to medics killed on the Karelian front during the Great Patriotic War. There is also a monument to Karelia Liberators dated September 30, 1944. The memorial at the mass grave of railway workers and Red Army soldiers killed in February 1919 reminds of the civil war. Nearby there is a monument to pilots defending Segozha's sky and a memorial to international fighters.

At Mir Street 16 stands the monument to G.F. Shpalikov — poet and playwright whose works are known far beyond Karelia. The Museum centre and Segozha centralized library system are located there too.

Cultural life and festive events

Mir Square is the city's main scene. The City Day is celebrated here and in Segozha falls on July 4. On this day residents gather on the square, interactive national platforms of the Centre for Interethnic Cooperation work, and entertainment for children is organised at the Family Park.

August 24 sees main events in honour of Karelian Republic Day — starting at 15:00 on the main stage. Dedicated to the republic's formation anniversary. And before the New Year a New Year fair unfolds here with a festival where you can taste local delicacies and buy souvenirs.
