Artyom — Gateway to Primorye

Artyom is the city that many travelers see first when arriving in Vladivostok. The international Knevichi Airport is located just 5 km from the center of Artyom, and this is where the journey to the Far East begins for thousands of tourists. The city covers an area of 122.58 km², with a population of approximately 108,274 people (2025). It is the fourth largest city in Primorsky Krai and a major industrial and logistics hub of the region.

History: From Swamp Mines to Modern City

The history of Artyom began in 1908, when a native of the Minsk Governorate Grigory Khodosevich founded his khutor here. Five years later, in 1913, a Vladivostok entrepreneur Leonty Skidelsky opened coal deposits at the 9th verst of the railway branch. Since mining took place on swampy, unstable soil, the enterprise was named "Zybunnye Kopi." The coal seams lay at a depth of 25–50 meters, and thanks to cheap labor, the mines rapidly increased capacity — by 1914 they produced about 15 thousand poods of coal.

In 1924, after the establishment of Soviet power, the settlement was renamed in honor of Fyodor Andreevich Sergeev — chairman of the Central Committee of the All-Russian Union of Miners, known by his party alias "Comrade Artyom." He was the founder of the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic, a close friend of Sergei Kirov and Joseph Stalin. On October 26, 1938, the settlement was granted city status. During the Soviet era, Artyom provided at least 70% of coal mining in Primorye.

Geographical Location and Climate

Artyom is located in the northern part of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, in an intermountain basin in the Knevichi River valley. The city's geographical coordinates are 43°21′ N 132°11′ E, with an average elevation of 40 meters above sea level. The Knevichi River basin covers over 80% of Artyom's territory. Its tributaries — Bolotnaya, Orlovka, Ivnyanka, Pushkaryovka, Zybunny Klyuch, and others — form a dense river network.

Artyom's climate is temperate monsoon. Winters here are cold and dry: stable snow cover forms in early December and lasts an average of 98 days, with temperatures ranging from −10°C in December to −12°C in February. Summer is hot and sunny but with high humidity — at the start of the season it reaches 88–95%. From July to September, Pacific typhoons affect the city, bringing heavy rainfall. August is the warmest and wettest month with a precipitation peak of about 120 mm.

Economy and Transport Hub

Artyom is a major industrial center of Primorye. Coal mining enterprises, the Artyom State District Power Station, and building materials plants are located here. The city lies on the Trans-Siberian Railway, making it an important transport hub. Knevichi Airport receives flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, and Asian cities, serving up to 1.7 million passengers per year.

Within Artyom lies a multimodal transport and logistics center, under construction with an investment of 15.4 billion rubles. This is a promising city development project for 2023–2027, which will strengthen Artyom's position as a logistics hub of the Far East.

Primorye Gambling Zone: Excitement on the Bay Shore

One of Artyom's main attractions is the Primorye gambling zone, occupying 620 hectares in the scenic Muravyina Bay of Ussuri Bay. It is one of Russia's four official gambling zones, established by decree of the Government of the Russian Federation on August 20, 2009.

The first resident of the zone was the Tigre de Cristal Hotel & Casino, which opened on November 11, 2015. Today it is the largest casino in Russia with 53 gaming tables and 226 slot machines. Nearby operates the Shambala casino, with its second phase scheduled for commissioning in 2025. Investors plan to build an 18-hole golf resort and 30 resort villas.

Natural Attractions and Recreation

Cultural Heritage and Monuments

Several monuments reflecting the city's history have been erected in Artyom. The "Miner's Glory" memorial on the Alley of Glory honors miners who brought fame to Artyom with high coal production records. The "Feat of the City" stela commemorates the combat and labor achievements of Artyom residents during the Great Patriotic War: 10,894 people went to the front, 2,968 died, and miners extracted 9.8 million tons of coal during the war years.

The Palace of Culture of Miners is the city's architectural landmark, a venue for concerts and events. The local history museum houses exhibits about the founding of Zybunnye Kopi and the life of the first settlers. The Epiphany and Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos churches adorn the cityscape.

Notable Natives

Artyom is the birthplace of several outstanding individuals. People's Artist of Russia Alexander Petrovich Slavsky was born here, an actor of the Maxim Gorky Primorsky Academic Regional Drama Theater. Poetess Vera Yakovlevna Gundareva (1946–2024), a member of the Union of Writers of Russia, dedicated many poems to the city. Viktor Vasilyevich Gorchakov served as chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Primorsky Krai.
