Where the name Maryina Horka came from

A small town in the Minsk region of Belarus bears a name that has puzzled local historians for decades. There are several versions of the origin of this toponym. According to one of them, the name is connected to the fact that a church was built on the hilltop for new settlers on the occasion of the appearance of the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Another version refers to pre-Christian times — allegedly, people worshipped the goddess Mare here, the protector of women and children. Be that as it may, the name stuck and even survived the renaming of the railway station.

The fact is that the station, opened in 1873, was officially listed as "Maryina Horka" — this is confirmed by 1898 timetables, tickets, and postal shipments. However, on May 1, 1902, the station was renamed to "Pukhovichi", while the town retained its historical name. So two names coexist side by side — Pukhovichi on the railway and Maryina Horka on the map of settlements.

The brigade's soldiers took part in the Afghan War, where they suffered heavy losses.
