The Khan Shatyr project is the work of British architect Norman Foster, Pritzker Prize laureate, author of the famous Reichstag in Berlin and the Gherkin skyscraper in London. The complex was opened on July 6, 2010 as part of the Astana Day celebrations.

The building is a tensile dome 150 meters high at the spire. The structure consists of a network of steel cables radiating from a single support pylon and covered with transparent ETFE polymer material. The engineering solution for creating a space with a controlled microclimate was developed by Buro Happold — lead engineer Mike Cook proposed the tensile cable structure that became the project's hallmark.

Temperature regulation occurs naturally without a powerful air conditioning system — thanks to the unique properties of the three-layer ETFE film and the design features of the tensile dome. The material absorbs sunlight, creating a greenhouse effect in winter, without turning the space into a greenhouse in summer thanks to ventilation solutions.

The total area of the complex is 127,000 square meters. Inside is a veritable city with diverse entertainment options.
