Strezhevoy began as a fishing settlement — in 1932, special settlers from the southern districts of Omsk Oblast arrived here to fish on the Ob River. But everything changed in the 1960s: the discovery of rich oil and gas fields transformed the settlement into the "capital of Tomsk oil workers". The city's founding date is considered to be September 1, 1966 — the extraction of the first ton of Tomsk oil.

Neftyanikov Avenue became a symbol of the city's new life. In 2014, the "I Love Strezhevoy" sign appeared here — a traditional inscription with a heart that can be found in many cities around the world.
