Bușteni Webcam: Bucegi Mountains in Real Time
Bușteni Resort and Bucegi Massif
Bușteni is a small mountain town in Prahova County, located in the Prahova Valley at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains at an average altitude of 850–900 m above sea level. The name of the settlement translates from Romanian as "logs" or "trees" — a reference to the dense forests that surround these places. Today, Bușteni is one of the most popular mountain resorts in Romania within the Bucegi Natural Park, and locals call it the "capital of Romanian mountaineering," since most of the best climbing routes are accessible from here.
The Bucegi mountain massif is part of the Southern Carpathians in central Romania, located south of the city of Brașov. The highest point of the massif is Omu Peak with an elevation of 2,507 m (according to other sources — 2,505 m). The Bucegi Natural Park was established in 2003 by the Romanian government to preserve the traditional cultural landscapes and biodiversity of the region.
Attractions of the Bucegi Mountains
A cable car runs from Bușteni to the Babele plateau. Here are the famous rock formations — Sphinx and Babele — bizarre stone figures weathered from massive sandstone at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. On Caraiman Mountain near Bușteni is the Heroes' Cross about 25 m high (according to other sources — 36 m), erected in memory of Romanian soldiers who died in World War I. It was in these mountains that in 1916 fierce fighting took place when Romania entered the war.
Urlătoarea Waterfall is another popular natural attraction accessible from Bușteni. It is located near the cable car and is easily reachable via a forest trail. Numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty have been laid in the vicinity of the resort — from walking paths to mountaineering ascents.
Ski Resort and Infrastructure
Bușteni has a reputation as a resort for both regular skiing and extreme snowboarding. The resort has slopes of varying difficulty, attracting both beginner skiers and experienced riders. The nearest international airport — Henri Coandă in Bucharest — is located approximately 140 km from Bușteni. You can reach the resort via the main DN1 highway, connecting Bucharest (about 130 km) and Brașov (about 40 km), which runs through the Prahova Valley.
Climate and Weather Conditions
The climate at the upper altitudes of Bucegi is characterized by dry conditions — the Bucegi plateau is very dry, and depending on the time of year there may be no water. At an altitude of about 850 m, where the town itself is located, the climate is milder, but in winter snow lies stably from December to March. In summer, the temperature on the slopes is comfortable for hiking — about 15–20°C at medium altitudes.
