Rokytnice nad Jizerou Webcam — Live Square Stream in Real Time
Central Square and Its Architecture
This live webcam opens up a view of the heart of the town — the central square of Rokytnice nad Jizerou, where two historic parts of the settlement meet. In the foreground rises the baroque dome of the church tower, topped with a cross that serves as a landmark for tourists and locals alike. On the right, attention is drawn to a building with a distinctive green copper roof — a structure that stands out among the surrounding houses with its architectural appearance. At the center of the frame is a church with a spire tower, surrounded by residential and administrative buildings with red tiled roofs. In the background stretch the forested hills and mountains of the Krkonoše range, creating the typical mountain landscape of this Czech region.
History of Rokytnice nad Jizerou: From Mines to Resort
The town was founded around 1574, when the first settlers began to develop these mountainous territories. Initially, the locals were engaged in mining copper, tin, silver, and lead — rich ore deposits attracted prospectors and craftsmen here. In parallel, timber harvesting, weaving, and glass production developed. A glassworks operated here from 1574 to 1599, leaving a mark on the industrial history of the region. Over time, ore mining faded into the past, and the town transformed into one of the largest ski resorts in the Krkonoše mountain range, while preserving its historical identity.
Church of St. Michael: A Baroque Gem of the Square
The main architectural dominant of the square is the baroque Church of St. Michael, built between 1752 and 1759 and solemnly consecrated in 1759. However, the history of this place begins much earlier: as far back as 1598, a Protestant wooden chapel stood here, which in the mid-17th century was rebuilt into a stone structure. The current baroque temple replaced its predecessors, becoming a symbol of the religious and cultural revival of the town after the turbulent events of the Thirty Years' War. Its dome, visible from a bird's-eye view through this online camera, serves as the visual center of the entire square.
Ski Resort in the Krkonoše Mountains
Today, Rokytnice nad Jizerou is known primarily as a ski resort. Located in the Krkonoše mountain range, the town offers slopes of varying difficulty for skiers and snowboarders. The high-altitude location ensures stable snow cover during the winter season, and the modern lift infrastructure makes the resort attractive to tourists from all over Europe. In summer, the mountain slopes are transformed: instead of skiers, hikers with backpacks, cyclists, and lovers of walking along mountain trails appear here.
Four Faces of the Town: Districts of Rokytnice
Administratively, the town is divided into 4 districts: Dolní Rokytnice (Lower Rokytnice), Horní Rokytnice nad Jizerou (Upper Rokytnice), Rokytno v Krkonoších, and Františkov v Krkonoších. Interestingly, the boundary between Lower and Upper Rokytnice runs right across the square in front of the town hall: most of the square belongs to Lower Rokytnice, while the town hall itself and the commercial building belong to Upper Rokytnice. This historical feature makes the square a unique place where two parts of the same town literally intersect. The population of the entire settlement is around 2,500 people, giving it the cozy atmosphere of a small mountain town.
