History of Snow King Mountain

Snow King Mountain ski resort is not just a popular skiing destination, but a true Wyoming legend. Snow King Mountain became the first ski area in the state of Wyoming, founded in 1936. Nearly 90 years ago, the first trails were laid here, and since then the resort has transformed from a modest spot for local skiers into a full-fledged year-round recreation center. Located on the southeastern outskirts of Jackson, just steps from the famous Town Square, Snow King remains the heart of the region's mountain life.

Modern Gondola: Blue Cabins and Technology

The centerpiece of the resort today is the new gondola — an eight-person Leitner-Poma lift that appeared here in 2021. This is the first Leitner-Poma lift at Snow King, replacing the old double Summit chairlift. Its capacity is 1,000 people per hour, allowing guests to be quickly transported to the summit without long waits in lines.

The gondola cabins catch the eye with their rich blue color. They are manufactured in France and provide a comfortable ride in an enclosed, warm cabin. The entire journey from base to summit takes just 5 minutes — during this time, passengers can enjoy the unfolding views and prepare for the descent.

Vertical Drop and Slope Terrain

Despite its compact size, Snow King offers a serious vertical drop. The mountain rises from a base elevation of 6,237 feet (1,901 m) to a summit at 7,808 feet (2,380 m), creating a vertical drop of 1,571 feet (479 m). Such terrain ensures a variety of trails — from gentle slopes for beginners to steep black runs for experienced skiers and snowboarders. The coniferous forest visible on the slopes adds northern character to the landscape and creates a sense of complete immersion in the wild nature of Wyoming.

Year-Round Recreation: Winter and Summer

Snow King operates year-round, and each season brings its own entertainment. In winter, in addition to skiing and snowboarding, guests can visit the snow tubing park at King Tubes Snow Tubing Park or ride the famous Cowboy Coaster. In summer, the resort transforms into a true adventure park. The Cowboy Coaster alpine coaster, Alpine Slide, zip line, Treetop Adventure Park ropes course, trampolines, Amaze'n Maze, and mini golf are all in operation. Hiking and mountain biking on scenic singletrack trails are also popular.

Lower Station Infrastructure

The lower gondola station is located at the mountain base near the parking area and restaurants. Everything here is designed for guest convenience: adjacent parking spaces, street parking, restaurants, and Snake River Brewing brewery. For those who want to live right on the slopes, the Residences at Snow King condominiums offer slope access. Guest amenities include a fitness center, spa, year-round heated outdoor pool and hot tub, game room, and conference rooms.

How to Get to Snow King

The resort is within walking distance of downtown Jackson — simply walk to Town Square and head southeast. For those arriving by car, parking spaces are available at the base. Jackson itself is a unique place — it is the gateway to Grand Teton National Park and one of the most colorful Wild West towns with ranch-style architecture and wooden boardwalks.
