Masdar City in Abu Dhabi — Live Webcam
Masdar City: a city of the future in the heart of the Arabian desert
Thirty kilometers from the center of Abu Dhabi, one of the most ambitious architectural projects of the 21st century is taking shape. Masdar City was conceived as the world's first city with zero carbon emissions, running entirely on renewable energy sources. On this page, a live webcam is available, allowing you to observe the life of this futuristic settlement in real time. The project was launched in 2006 by the state-owned enterprise Mubadala Development Company with a budget of 22 billion US dollars, and since then it has attracted the attention of architects, ecologists, and urbanists from around the world.
How the city was built: from concept to first buildings
Construction of Masdar City began in 2008, and the first six buildings were completed by the end of 2010. Initially, the project was planned to be completed by 2016 with a population of 50,000 people, but the deadlines were repeatedly pushed back — first to 2020–2025, and then to 2030. By 2016, only 5% of the planned territory had been developed — about 6 square kilometers out of the total area of the future city. These rates reflect the complexity of implementing such a large-scale project in the harsh desert climate.
Architecture inspired by Middle Eastern traditions
The city's design was developed by Foster + Partners under the direction of renowned architect Norman Foster. Before creating the concept, Foster thoroughly studied the experience of building hot desert cities — Muscat in Oman and Cairo in Egypt — adopting the key principles of traditional Arabic architecture. A distinctive feature of the development is the latticed interwoven structures that shield residents from the scorching heat and create a cool microclimate on the streets. A high protective wall is provided around the entire perimeter of the city zone, blocking hot desert winds and sandstorms.
Ecological concept: zero emissions and renewable energy
Masdar is the world's first city with zero carbon emissions, using only renewable energy sources. The city was designed as a waste-free zone, completely free of internal combustion engine vehicles and industrial enterprises that negatively impact the environment. Energy to power the city comes from solar panels — photovoltaic installations convert sunlight into electricity for virtually all the settlement's needs. The name "Masdar" translates from Arabic as "source" — a fitting symbol for a place intended to become a source of new sustainable development technologies.
Driverless transport: PRT electric cars and pedestrian streets
One of Masdar's most distinctive features is the complete absence of conventional cars on its streets. The city is served by autonomous electric vehicles — PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) — traveling at speeds of up to 40 km/h, replacing traditional buses and taxis. The city's layout is pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly, with personal automated transport and public electric buses. This makes Masdar City a unique example of a city designed with people, not cars, at its center.
Location and how to get to Masdar City
Masdar City is located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, not far from Abu Dhabi International Airport. The distance from the center of the UAE capital is approximately 30 kilometers to the east. You can reach the city by taxi or rental car via Sheikh Zayed Road. Nearby attractions — Yas Marina with its Formula 1 race track, Ferrari World, and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — are all within a half-hour drive, making Masdar a convenient stop on a tourist route through Abu Dhabi.
