From Bus Station to Victory Square

Until 2005, the space we now know as Victory Square officially had no name. It functioned as the bus station square — the bus terminal was located in the building at 32 Stroiteley Street. Townspeople were accustomed to this place, but it had no official name.

The situation changed thanks to the initiative of the Council of Veterans of War and Labor. Their petition to the City Duma led to the fact that City Duma Resolution No. 332 dated May 11, 2005 assigned the name "Victory Square" to the area near the former bus station. This occurred in the year of the 60th anniversary of the Great Victory, giving the event special symbolic significance.

Victory Stele — The Monument Visible on Camera

The central element of the square is the "Victory Stele" monument, unveiled in 2005 for the anniversary of Victory. The author of the monument is Anton Kapersky, a Strezhevoy sculptor who created a laconic and expressive image.

The stele consists of three vertical parallelepipeds of varying sizes made of black granite and white marble with a height of 3 meters. The contrast of materials symbolizes the darkness of war and the light of victory, while the three pillars represent the three generations affected by the Great Patriotic War. Inscribed on the stele are words known to every Strezhevoy resident: "There is glory that will not be forgotten. There is memory that will have no end".

Strezhevoy — A City Built by the Whole Country

To understand Victory Square, you need to know the history of Strezhevoy itself. The city was founded in 1966 as a base for developing oil fields. The first dwellings were trailers and panel houses on the bank of the Pasol channel. Today it is a modern city with a population of about 40,000 people, surrounded by cedar forests and swamps.

Strezhevoy is located in the far north of Tomsk Oblast, almost a thousand kilometers from Tomsk. It is one of the northernmost points of the region, and the city is classified as equivalent to the Far North. In winter, temperatures drop below -40°C, and in summer there are white nights — a phenomenon unusual for these latitudes but familiar to local residents.

Victory Square as a Center of Attraction

Today Victory Square is not only a memorial, but also the main public space of Strezhevoy. The city's main events take place here: concerts for City Day, folk festivals, and on May 9 — the city rally and the start of the procession.

The square has developed as a transportation and pedestrian space. Stroiteley Street and Ermakova Street intersect here — two thoroughfares connecting the center with residential neighborhoods. The square features decorative flower beds, a fountain, and benches for relaxation. Green spaces — birch trees, lawns, and pedestrian paths — create a sense of coziness in the middle of a Siberian city.

How to Get to Victory Square

Victory Square is located in the central part of Strezhevoy, at the intersection of Stroiteley and Ermakova Streets. It is one of the city's main transportation hubs — easy to reach by bus or car from any neighborhood.

For those visiting Strezhevoy for the first time: the square is within walking distance of the bus station (which, as we remember, historically gave it its life). Landmarks include the Palace of Arts "Sovremennik" at Neftyanikov Square and the city administration building. If you are driving, pay attention to the road markings — the square has organized traffic with several lanes and pedestrian crossings.
