Pier 39 in San Francisco — Online Camera with Sea Lions
Bayfront Charm and Pier History
The waterfront has a rich past. Pier 39 opened on October 4, 1978 on the site of the old Fisherman's Wharf. Initially it was a promenade complex with many establishments. Originally Pier 39 had 50 shops, 23 restaurants, a diving pool, and street performers. Long finger piers like this one historically served for mooring ships carrying general cargo, which is why port cranes can be seen in the background. Today container shipping has replaced the old method, and these structures remain as a historic element of the harbor.
Realm of California Sea Lions
The main stars of this online camera are the sea lions. They took a liking to the wooden docks unexpectedly. Sea lions began appearing on K-Dock of Pier 39 shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989. People stopped using the pier, and the animals took it over. Within a few months of their arrival, the number of sea lions at Pier 39 grew to more than 300 individuals. Watching the broadcast, you can distinguish males and females. Male California sea lions reach 850 pounds (390 kg) and 7 feet (2.1 m) in length, while females weigh about 110 kg. It's easy to tell them apart: males develop a bump or "crest" on their head at 4-5 years of age.
Feathered Neighbors: The Gulls of Pier 39
Besides pinnipeds, birds inhabit the wooden decks and rocks. Pier 39 is home to the western gull, California gull, and ring-billed gull. Here you can also encounter the largest member of the family — the great black-backed gull, with a wingspan reaching 1.7 meters. They often appear in the webcam's view, competing for the best spots in the sun.
Infrastructure and Industrial Landscape
Pier 39 in San Francisco is not only nature but also developed tourist infrastructure. The waterfront features about 20 restaurants and 100 shops. And the industrial cranes and port facilities in the background remind us that the bay remains an important waterway. Construction cranes and buildings create a unique contrast with the animals resting on the water.
Attractions and Entertainment on the Waterfront
The shopping and entertainment complex offers entertainment for all ages. Pier 39 is home to the Aquarium of the Bay with a 90-meter tunnel and nearly 20,000 marine inhabitants. There's also the 7D Experience with virtual 3D attractions, a handcrafted carousel from Italy, Magowan's Infinite Mirror Maze, and musical steps. In the evening, street performers gather here, and during the day you can simply stroll along the wooden decks.
What You Can See on the Camera
The Pier 39 San Francisco webcam broadcasts a view of a floating wooden platform on the water near Pier 39. Sea lions rest on the platforms and coastal rocks, and gulls are also visible on the platforms. A light mist rises over the water. In the background is the pier with wooden decks and pillars, port and industrial facilities, construction cranes, and buildings. The area is a popular tourist attraction where you can observe wild sea lions in their natural habitat along the harbor shores. The real-time camera shows the life of the bay without embellishment — as it is.
