The rock composition is diverse: from basalt and picobasalt to andesite and basaltic andesite. The continental crust here is over 25 kilometers thick, creating conditions for the formation of large magma chambers.
The summit coordinates are 43.979° N, 121.688° W — roughly at the same latitude as Chicago, but the high-altitude climate makes the weather entirely different. Snow cover on the summit can persist into mid-summer, and temperatures drop to -30°C in winter.
The Rare Red Fox and Other Inhabitants
The slopes of Bachelor are home to an astonishing variety of animals. But the real sensation occurred when a rare Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) was spotted on the resort's webcam. This subspecies is considered one of the rarest mammals in North America — the population is estimated at only a few hundred individuals.

The Sierra Nevada red fox inhabits high elevations and is extremely elusive, so every observation is a valuable contribution to science.
