Nizino is a village in the Lomonosov District of Leningrad Oblast, located a few kilometers from Peterhof. This place has a remarkable history: the village has been known since the 15th century, when it was called Popovaya Gora, and appeared in Swedish cadastral books as Pappingondo — Popovsky Parish. The modern name was given in honor of Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder (1831–1891), son of Emperor Nicholas I, who was affectionately called "Niksa" or "Nizzy" in the family.

In the 1830s–1850s under Nicholas I, large-scale improvement of the Babigon Heights and the Peterhof Canal valley began. Peterhof Fountain System: The Water That Created This Place

The fate of Nizino is inextricably linked with Peterhof's fountain system. In August 1720, the feasibility of supplying water from the Ropsha Heights to the Peterhof fountains was discovered. Construction began in November 1720, and by August 1721 the fountains and the Grand Cascade were launched. Engineer Tuvolkov laid out the route so that earthworks were minimal, and water flowed by gravity using the elevation difference — a brilliant solution by Peter the Great.

Today, Nizino and its surroundings are home to nine ponds, whose water flows through the Peterhof Canal to feed the fountains of the Upper Garden and Lower Park: Bolshoy Zapasnoy (Nikolsky), Samsonovsky (Maly Zapasnoy), Orliny, Ruinny, Krugly, Melnichny, Sapyorny, Babigonsky, and Tserkovny. The Meadow Park covers over 85 hectares, of which nearly 18 are water surface.

Belvedere Palace and Other Attractions

The main architectural gem of the area is the Belvedere Palace, an 18th-century monument. In the 19th century, a special lifting machine operated here — a prototype of the modern elevator. The main entrance was adorned with sculptures that exactly replicate those that today stand on the Anichkov Bridge in St. Petersburg.

In Nizino itself stands the Church of the Holy Martyr Tsarina Alexandra, built in 1854. On the hill by the Tserkovny Pond, a view opens up that leaves no one indifferent.
