The full name is 19 Mayıs Gençlik Meydanı, which translates as Youth and Sports Square of May 19th. The date is no coincidence: on May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun and launched the national liberation movement that led to the creation of the modern Turkish Republic. On that day, he organized a congress of representatives from Anatolian cities in İzmit and called upon the youth to resist the occupiers after the Ottoman Empire's defeat in World War I.
