In 1944, Les Sables, Château-d'Olonne, and Olonne-sur-Mer merged into a single city, receiving a compound name. The "d'Olonne" part refers to the historical region and the former island of Olon, on whose territory the historic center is located. Today the former settlements have become districts with their own character: Château-d'Olonne features ancient buildings on elevated ground, Olonne-sur-Mer is a quiet coastal village, and Le Sables proper is the port and main beach.
From Fishing Village to World Yachting Center
The transformation of Le Sables-d'Olonne into the world capital of sailing began with the idea of French yachtsman Philippe Jeanto, who founded the Vendée Globe race in 1989. The concept of a round-the-world race without stops and without outside assistance (solo, non-stop, unassisted) became revolutionary for sailing. The first race started in November 1989, and the winner was Titouan Lamazou.
Since then, Le Sables-d'Olonne has remained the unchanged start and finish location of the race, held every 4 years. Several weeks before the start, the "Vendée Globe Village" is erected in the city — a temporary town with pavilions featuring the participants' boats. It is visited by hundreds of thousands of spectators. To date, the record for completing the course belongs to Charlie Dalin — 64 days, 19 hours, and 22 minutes (2024-2025 race). Among women, the record holder is Clarisse Crémer with a result of 87 days, 10 hours, and 25 minutes (2020-2021 race).
Port Olona is one of the largest marinas on the Atlantic coast, capable of accommodating up to 4,000 yachts. This creates a unique contrast: fishing vessels with colorful hulls sit alongside white cruising yachts, and the smell of fresh fish mixes with the salt breeze.

La Grande Plage (The Great Beach) is the main artery of the resort — a crescent-shaped strip of fine golden sand over 2.5 km long. On the elevated ground of Château-d'Olonne, the ruins of the Château d'Olonne and the Church of Saint-Michel are visible — witnesses to the medieval history of the settlement. Oysters from the Le Sables bay are known for their nutty flavor, which is imparted by the unique microclimate and plankton of the tidal zone. The fishing port remains active — every morning dozens of trawlers return with their catch, and a fresh fish auction takes place on the promenade.
The city's cultural life is closely tied to the sea. In addition to the Vendée Globe, stages of the World Sailing Championships, maritime music festivals, and contemporary art exhibitions are held here.
