Camping Bijar Osor — Online Webcam with Marina View
Ancient Osor — Gateway Between Two Islands
At first glance, Osor seems like a tiny village on the Croatian island of Cres, but this location holds the memory of millennia. Osor is a village and small port on the Croatian island of Cres, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, part of the town of Mali Lošinj. Today, only 26 people live here as of 2021, but the scale of this place's history is astounding. Osor is an ancient city approximately 4,000 years old, located at the crossroads of land and sea routes. Trade routes once intersected here, connecting the Adriatic with the interior regions of the Balkans.
Osor's unique geographical position determined its fate. Osor is located on the isthmus connecting the islands of Cres and Lošinj, which were once a single island. This was the route of a vital sea passage, and the Romans were the first to recognize its importance. The channel between Cres and Lošinj was built in Roman times to shorten the sea route between Adriatic ports and Dalmatia. Since then, Osor has transformed from a strategic hub into a quiet harbor where people come for peace, not conquest.
Camping Bijar — Base for Exploring Cres Island
Right on the shore of this historic bay lies Camping Bijar — one of those places where civilization meets pristine nature. Camping Bijar is located just 500 meters from the historic center of Osor, in a centuries-old pine forest that provides shade on hot summer days. The pine trees grow right by the water, and their aroma mingles with the sea breeze — it's the first thing you notice when stepping out of a tent or motorhome.
The campsite's infrastructure caters to travelers with different needs. Camping Bijar has 250 pitches, of which 23 have water and electricity hookups, and 26 have electricity only. The beach area is arranged in a characteristic Croatian coastal style: a stone beach with concrete sunbathing platforms and small pebble coves. Guests rate this place 4.1 out of 5, noting the water quality, convenient sea access, and proximity to attractions.
Osor — An Open-Air Museum Town
The walk from the campsite to Osor's center takes just a few minutes, but you find yourself in a completely different era. Osor is often called a "museum town" due to its rich history and numerous sculptures scattered throughout the center, including works by the famous Croatian master Ivan Meštrović. Here, every stone bears witness to the past: Roman foundations, medieval walls, and Renaissance palaces coexist in a space that holds more history than people.
Every summer, Osor fills with the sounds of classical music. Since 1976, the Osor Musical Evenings classical music festival has been held in Osor. Concerts take place in historic halls and open-air venues, transforming the tiny town into the cultural capital of the region. For guests of Camping Bijar, this is an opportunity to combine a beach holiday with an evening of chamber music in the atmosphere of a thousand-year-old town.
The Nature of Cres Island — From Mountains to Sea
The island of Cres, where Osor stands, is not just a dot on the map but a whole ecosystem. Cres Island has an area of 404 sq km and a maximum elevation of 650 m (Mount Gorice). The Mediterranean climate and diverse terrain have created conditions for remarkable biodiversity. Pine forests, oak groves, olive terraces, and wild rocky plateaus alternate across an area that can be crossed in a couple of hours by car.
One of Cres' main natural treasures is the griffon vulture — a protected and endangered bird species that soars above the rocks near the village of Beli. This predator's wingspan reaches 2.8 meters, and watching it in flight is a spectacle you never forget. For ornithologists and nature lovers, Cres is a true paradise where you can encounter over 240 bird species.
The island's only major freshwater source is Lake Vrana, located in the southern part of Cres. This enormous natural reservoir supplies water not only to Cres but also to neighboring Lošinj. The lake is surrounded by a protected area where swimming is prohibited, but hiking along ecological trails is permitted.
Beaches and Bays Around Osor
The water in the bays near Osor is turquoise and crystal clear, making them ideal for beach holidays. Stone slabs that slope gently into the sea alternate with small pebble coves where you can find solitude even at the height of the season. Camping Bijar is located right on such a stretch of coast where nature has preserved its pristine appearance.
If you head north from Osor, you can discover one of the most beautiful beaches on Cres Island — Miholašćica, located in a bay about 500 m wide. This beach is surrounded by rocks and pine forest, with a gentle water entry — ideal for families with children. The southern coast offers more wild and hard-to-reach bays, which are easier to access by boat — and the pier at Camping Bijar provides just such an opportunity.
Neighboring Lošinj and the Mountain Village of Lubenice
From Osor, you can see the swing bridge connecting the islands of Cres and Lošinj, as well as the neighboring island itself. Lošinj is famous for its pine parks and aristocratic atmosphere — Austrian emperors once came here for health treatments. You can reach the bridge from Camping Bijar on foot in 10–15 minutes along the waterfront.
Near Osor lies the ancient mountain village of Lubenice with panoramic views of the sea and neighboring islands. This abandoned settlement atop a cliff offers one of the most impressive views of the Kvarner Gulf. The road there winds in switchbacks through olive groves, and at the top opens a panorama worth the mountain climb.
How to Get There and Best Time to Visit
You can reach Cres Island by ferry from Pula (from the mainland) or from Rijeka via Lošinj. The ferry crossing from Pula takes about 1.5 hours and arrives at Porozina, from which Osor is 40 minutes by bus or car. An alternative is the ferry from Lošinj to Cres, which is shorter and runs more frequently during the high season.
The best time to visit Camping Bijar is from May to September. In June and September, there are fewer tourists, and the water is already warm enough for swimming. July and August are peak season, when Osor comes alive thanks to the classical music festival and an influx of sailors from across Europe. If you're looking for solitude, choose May or October — prices are lower, the weather is mild, and nature is in full bloom.
What You Can See on the Camera
The Camping Bijar live webcam broadcasts a view of the pier with docked yachts, motorboats, and sailboats. The calm waters of the bay with stone piers and mooring facilities — this is what you see in real time. Along the shore lies a pine forest, and in the background — a vegetated hilly coastline. Several boats with canopies are visible moored at the pier, as well as a sailing boat with a mast. In the distance, a small sandy beach and rocky shore can be seen. This real-time webcam allows you to assess the situation in the bay, sea conditions, and pier occupancy before heading to this location in person.
