This webcam is installed in the German town of Oberwiesenthal, but its main feature is the view of Karlovy Vary located on the other side of the mountain range. Thanks to the fact that Oberwiesenthal sits at an altitude of about 900–1215 meters on the Ore Mountains ridge, and Karlovy Vary lies in a valley on the Czech side, in clear weather the city can be seen at a distance of about 30–40 km in a straight line. Both cities are historically connected by the Ore Mountains. Karlovy Vary was founded around 1350 as a balneological resort, and Oberwiesenthal in 1527 as a silver mining settlement. In the 19th century, Oberwiesenthal transformed from a mining town into a ski resort, while Karlovy Vary became an international elite resort, maintaining their neighborhood across the mountain range. Today, Karlovy Vary is the largest Czech resort, known for its mineral springs and Art Nouveau and Neoclassical architecture.
