Architectural Appearance of the New City Hall Building
The old Sendai City Hall was built in 1929 and stood until the early 2010s. It was a typical town hall for its time — monumental but not suited for modern administrative needs. The old building was demolished as an architectural monument of the 1930s — the new building opened in 2013.
The new Sendai City Hall was designed by the world-renowned architect Toyo Ito and features innovative architecture. Ito, a Pritzker Prize laureate, is known for his approach to creating "fluid" spaces where the boundaries between interior and exterior are blurred. In July 1945, as a result of an air raid, most of the historic center of Sendai was destroyed, including Sendai Castle and the Date clan mausoleum. The Postwar Reconstruction Memorial Hall is dedicated to the memory of these events. After the war, the city was rebuilt according to a new plan — wide avenues, multi-story buildings, and green zones.
Within walking distance of Kotodai Park are the Ichibanchō shopping streets and the busiest business district in Tohoku — Kokubunchō. This area is the complete opposite of the administrative center: nightlife thrives here, with bars, restaurants, and shops operating. The contrast between the strict government district and the bustling Kokubunchō is one of Sendai's distinctive features.
