Golden Eagle Nest #1 in Câmpulung Moldovenesc — Online Webcam
Webcam at a Golden Eagle Nest in the Carpathians
In the dense coniferous forest of Romanian Bukovina, high in the crown of an old tree, sits a massive golden eagle nest. This online webcam opens access to one of the most secluded corners of the Carpathians, where wildlife has remained almost pristine. Câmpulung Moldovenesc — a small town in northeastern Romania, surrounded by wooded hills and mountain ranges, has become the home of a pair of majestic predators that can now be observed in real time.
The Golden Eagle in Romania: King of the Carpathian Skies
The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of the largest birds of prey in Europe, with a wingspan reaching 2.2 meters. In Romania, this species is found exclusively in the Carpathian Mountains and in their immediate vicinity, preferring inaccessible mountain areas with minimal human presence. The bird is listed in the Red Book of Romania and is under strict protection — its role in the ecosystem cannot be overestimated. As an apex predator, the golden eagle controls prey populations and performs natural selection by consuming sick and old animals, maintaining the health of rodent and other mammal populations.
The Lucina and Caliman Pair: Nesting History
This particular pair of golden eagles became known thanks to years of observation. The female is named Lucina, and the male is Caliman. They settled at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level, far from settlements and tourist trails. The nest is located in the crown of a coniferous tree on wooded hills — a typical location for golden eagles, which in the Carpathians often choose tall trees instead of rock niches characteristic of other regions.
Unfortunately, the history of this pair has a tragic page: the female Lucina was found dead on October 31 with no visible injuries. The circumstances of her death are still being investigated by ornithologists. Despite this, the male Caliman continues to visit the nest, and the camera allows monitoring the future of this nesting site.
Wild Bucovina: Guardians of Wildlife
Observation of this pair became possible thanks to the work of the Wild Bucovina association — a non-governmental non-profit organization that has been monitoring golden eagles for over 6 years. It was the volunteers of this association who installed the first webcam at a golden eagle nest in Bukovina in the Carpathians. The camera was mounted with strict precautions to avoid disturbing the birds — the installation was carried out during a period when the eagles were absent from the nest, and the equipment is carefully camouflaged.
The Nature of Bukovina: Land of Mountains and Forests
Bukovina is a historical region in northeastern Romania, known for its dense forests, mountain landscapes, and rich biodiversity. The Câmpulung Moldovenesc area is located in the Carpathian foothills, near the Rarău mountain massif — a popular ski resort. These forests are home to brown bears, wolves, lynx, as well as rare bird species — the Ural owl and the spotted nutcracker. The altitude of 1200 meters, where the nest is located, corresponds to the upper boundary of the coniferous belt, where spruces and firs form dense stands, creating an ideal environment for nesting large predators.
The Importance of the Webcam for Science and Conservation
The live streaming from a golden eagle nest is not only an opportunity for nature lovers to observe a rare bird, but also an important scientific tool. Ornithologists receive data on the pair's behavior, incubation periods, feeding of chicks, and interaction with the environment. Such observations help better understand the ecology of the species and develop effective conservation measures. In conditions where the golden eagle population in Europe is declining due to habitat destruction and poaching, each such project becomes a contribution to biodiversity conservation.
What You Can See on the Camera
The camera is installed in close proximity to the nest, built from thick branches and coniferous tree limbs. A large bird sits on the nest — a golden eagle with dark brown plumage, light patches on the wings, yellow legs, and a characteristic powerful curved beak. Around it are visible spruce branches with green needles, in the background — tree trunks and foliage of the dense coniferous forest. The bird is in a calm state, periodically surveying the surroundings — typical behavior of a golden eagle, which uses the nest as an observation post. The webcam operates in real time, allowing you to see the natural behavior of the predator in its natural habitat without any human intervention.
