Stradun Street in Dubrovnik — Live Webcam Streaming Online
The Main Artery of the Old Town
Stradun Street is the heart of Dubrovnik, its main pedestrian thoroughfare stretching across the entire Old Town. If you're watching this live webcam, you're seeing the very street that was once a sea channel separating the Ragusan peninsula. In the 12th century, the channel was filled in and paved with stone, transforming it into the city's main commercial and social artery. Today, Stradun is about 300 meters of polished limestone, traversed daily by thousands of tourists who give the stones that distinctive shine.
The street connects two of the Old Town's most important points: the Pile Gate with its fountain on the west and the Ploče Gate on the east. On both sides of Stradun stand buildings whose modern appearance was formed after the catastrophic earthquake of 1667, which destroyed most of the previous structures. This is why the street's architecture looks remarkably uniform — arcades, stone facades, and characteristic Croatian tile roofs.
Architectural Gems at the Ends of the Street
At the western end of Stradun, right by the Pile Gate, stands the Big Onofrio's Fountain — a monumental 15th-century structure built in 1438 by the Neapolitan architect Onofrio della Cava. This fountain with sixteen faces and water-spouting maskers was once part of the city's water supply system, providing residents with drinking water. Today, it is one of the most photographed spots in the city.
At the opposite, eastern end of the street is the Small Onofrio's Fountain — a smaller copy of its elder brother, also created in the 15th century. Near it rises the bell tower of the Franciscan monastery, and at the western end stands the City Bell Tower, which has been keeping time for Dubrovnik's residents for several centuries. These two fountains and two bell towers create a kind of gateway, framing Stradun on both sides.
Why Stradun's Stones Shine
If you've ever seen photographs of Stradun, you've surely noticed the mirror-like shine of its pavement. This effect is achieved through several factors. First, the cobblestones are made of high-quality local limestone that naturally has a light, almost marble-like hue. Second, thousands of tourist feet walking the street daily have polished the stones to a mirror finish over decades. Third, city services regularly maintain the pavement, keeping it in perfect condition.
Stradun looks especially impressive after rain — water fills the micro-voids between the stones, and the street turns into a true mirror reflecting the facades of surrounding buildings. This spectacle attracts photographers and artists from around the world.
Dubrovnik as King's Landing
For millions of viewers worldwide, Dubrovnik will forever remain King's Landing — the capital of the Seven Kingdoms from the cult series Game of Thrones. Filming took place at various locations in the Old Town, and Stradun was no exception. It was along this street that the show's characters walked, and it was here that scenes of civil unrest and royal processions were filmed.
Lovrijenac Fortress, located west of the Old Town, became the filming location for scenes featuring Stannis's great fleet. The Minčeta Tower in the northwest was transformed into the Tower of the Hand, and the island of Lokrum served as a backdrop for some scenes outside the capital. Today, themed tours are conducted through Dubrovnik, during which guides show the exact filming locations and share amusing stories from the set.
The Feast of Saint Blaise on Stradun
Every year on February 3, Dubrovnik celebrates the Feast of Saint Blaise — the patron saint of the city. This tradition dates back to 972, when, according to legend, Saint Blaise appeared in a priest's dream and warned of the approaching Venetian fleet, allowing the city to prepare its defense. Since then, the holiday has become the most important event in Dubrovnik's life.
The celebration begins in late January and lasts for several days. Believers in traditional folk costumes arrive in Dubrovnik from remote villages and towns. The central event is the Eucharistic service in front of Dubrovnik Cathedral, after which the solemn procession begins. Along Stradun is carried a gilded relic — a statue of Saint Blaise holding a model of the city in his hands. The procession travels the entire length of the street and then returns to the church. This is an ancient festival combining religious rites, cultural events, and folk festivities.
Legends and Mystical Stories
Dubrovnik is a city with a rich history, and Stradun holds many mysteries. There are legends about an invisible world permeating the city's life. They say that at night, ghosts of past eras roam the street — merchants, pirates, aristocrats. Some tourists claim to feel the special energy of this place, as if the stones remember everything that has happened on them over the centuries.
One of the most famous legends is connected to the Onofrio fountains. It is believed that if you make a wish at the Big Fountain and walk around it three times clockwise, the wish will surely come true. Another story tells of a secret passage allegedly connecting Stradun to the fortress walls. Myths and reality are so closely intertwined here that sometimes it's hard to tell one from the other.
