The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort is not just another Caribbean resort. It is a place where the Armstrong family's history intertwines with the history of St. Croix itself. Founded in 1947 with 11 rooms, it became the first hotel on the island and remains a family business to this day — a rarity even for the Caribbean. The land on which the resort stands has been in the family since 1922, and its history dates back to 1653, when a sugar mill operated here.

Today, The Buccaneer is one of the oldest family-run resorts in the Caribbean, managed by the same family for about 80 years. 17th Century Sugar Mill and Resort Architecture

One of the most unusual details of The Buccaneer is the restored 1653 sugar mill. It stands on the resort grounds and is used for events — for example, weekly outdoor dinners. It is literally a living monument of the colonial era, integrated into a modern resort complex.

The resort comprises 131 rooms, all with balconies or patios and mini-fridges. The flat-roofed motel buildings visible on the camera are part of the original development, carefully preserved and restored by the Armstrong family.

How to Get to The Buccaneer

The resort can be reached in several ways. From St. Croix Airport (Henry E. Rohlsen Airport) — about 20 minutes by car. An alternative option is from the St. Croix Seaplane Base, which takes approximately 8 minutes.

St. Croix Airport receives flights from Miami, Atlanta, New York, and other cities on the U.S. East Coast. You can also fly to St. Thomas and take a ferry to St. Croix.
