History of Pirbadet Aquapark

Pirbadet aquapark is Trondheim's main water complex, located on the artificial island of Brattøra at the mouth of the Nidelva River. It opened on June 15, 2001 and replaced the former Sentralbadet pool in the city center. Construction cost 272.5 million Norwegian kroner, and the project was developed by Per Knudsen Arkitektkontor AS in collaboration with Asplan Viak Sør AS.

Most attractions and pools are located in one large hall, making navigation through the complex convenient even in bad weather. There is a 50-meter pool that hosted Norwegian swimming championships in 2010 and 2017. In December 2011, the building was damaged by Cyclone Dagmar, which damaged the facade, but after restoration the complex continues to operate as the main water center of the Trøndelag region.

Brattøra District — Artificial Island at the Mouth of Nidelva

Pirbadet is located in the Brattøra district — an artificial island of 0.485 km² at the mouth of the Nidelva River. This area was historically a port zone, but since the late 20th century it has transformed into a modern urban space with offices, residential buildings, cultural venues, and recreational infrastructure. The promenade along the fjord has become a popular walking spot, and the Pirbadet webcam allows you to appreciate the atmosphere of this place from afar.

Near the aquapark are the cruise piers Pir I and Ila 30, welcoming tourists from around the world. The Brattøra district also houses Trondheim Central Station, making it a transportation hub of the city.

Promenade and Cruise Port Quay 68

In close proximity to the camera is Quay 68 — Trondheim's main cruise pier, located in the Brattøra district near Pirbadet. In April 2026, a shore power system with capacity up to 12 MW was commissioned at the pier, allowing cruise ships to connect to the electrical grid while docked and turn off diesel generators. The maximum vessel length served at the pier is 31 meters.

Trondheim's cruise port receives dozens of liners during the navigation season, and the Pirbadet webcam sometimes captures the moment vessels approach the pier. The promenade along Quay 68 is equipped for pedestrian traffic and is part of the route connecting the aquapark to the city center.

Attractions Around the Mouth of the Nidelva River

The mouth of the Nidelva River is the historical center of Trondheim, and several iconic landmarks are concentrated around it. 800 meters from the cruise pier is the Trondheim Maritime Museum, dedicated to the region's maritime heritage. In the fjord's waters, Munkholmen Island is visible — a former monastery, fortress, and state prison, now functioning as a museum and recreation spot.

On the eastern bank of the Nidelva River lies the historic Bakklandet district — a picturesque neighborhood with wooden houses, cafes, and shops between the Old Town Bridge and Bakke Bridge. The Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) connects the city center with Bakklandet and offers views of the colorful warehouses along the waterfront. Nearby is Nidaros Cathedral — the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world. And in the Bakklandet area operates Trampe — the world's first bicycle lift.
