Why Belokurikha is Called the Siberian Davos

The comparison of Belokurikha with the Swiss resort of Davos has solid grounds. Both resorts began their history in the 19th century when the health benefits of their climate were discovered. A powerful spa and resort infrastructure developed around them, and both gained high status and international recognition.

However, the Altai resort has its own unique advantages. The mountain air of Belokurikha contains up to 2300 aeroions per 1 cm³, which is twice as much as at Alpine resorts. It helps relieve stress, combat fatigue, and prevent cardiovascular diseases. Belokurikha focuses on affordable family vacations, unlike the more premium Davos, and offers a unique combination of radon thermal springs, mineral waters, and therapeutic muds of the Altai salt lakes.

History of Belokurikha: From Village to Federal Resort

The settlement of Belokurikha was founded by Russian settlers in 1803 in the valley of the river of the same name. They were attracted by fertile black soils and hayfields. Almost immediately, the settlers noticed about 70 thermal springs that did not freeze in winter. The largest source was a lake with fountains of sand and pebbles at the bottom. White steam always hovered over the river, which gave the area its name.

Peasants quickly noticed that fatigue and chronic illnesses passed quickly in the valley. In 1866, they reported their observations to the engineer of the Altai Mining Department, Stepan Ivanovich Gulyaev. In 1867, he built the first resort bathhouse at his own expense, which is considered the official founding year of the resort.

Unique Properties of Radon Springs

Nitrogen-siliceous thermal waters come to the surface at a temperature of 37-42°C. They contain radon dissolved along with nitrogen, as well as fluorine and silicic acid. The therapeutic effect is based on the principle of radiation hormesis — a small dose of radiation energy stimulates the body's defense systems.

The impact occurs in two ways: neuro-reflex through skin nerve endings and humoral through the blood into the subcutaneous fat. The result is reduced cholesterol, normalization of the blood lipid spectrum, cessation of inflammation and degenerative processes in joints and spine, analgesic and immunostimulating effects. After the procedure, ionization occurs in the tissues, triggering recovery. Radon is completely eliminated from the body in 2.5 hours.

Mount Church: Symbol and Landmark

Mount Church (801 m) got its name from the rock formation at the top resembling the dome of an Orthodox church with a cross on it. According to legend, at the beginning of the 20th century there was a chapel on the mountain built by Old Believers Taras and Anastasia in gratitude for the miraculous birth of a child after long infertility. In the 1920s, the chapel was burned down.

The indigenous Tubalars called it "Kaacha" ("main, sacred") and "Mountain of Bars". Shamans used it as a place of power for rituals, and warriors used it to gain strength before battles. On the slopes are the rocks "Four Sisters" and "Two Brothers". A horned statue of the Mountain Master is installed on the mountain. According to belief, if you throw a coin into the statue's opening with your back turned, your wish will come true. The climb to the top takes 25 minutes; along the way you can feed chipmunks and birds.

Climate and Geographic Location

The town is located in the southeastern part of the Altai Krai in the Belokurikha river valley, at an altitude of 240-250 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount Church. The area of the territory is 92.3 km².

The climate is characterized by a high average annual air temperature for Siberia, predominantly windy weather, and the absence of large atmospheric pressure drops. In terms of the number of sunny days per year (260) Belokurikha is comparable to the resorts of Crimea and the Caucasus. Precipitation is up to 800 mm, mainly in summer.

Legends and Myths of Belokurikha

In ancient times, on the banks of a river enveloped in white steam, there lived a shaman. Khan Altai turned his younger daughters Aruu-Kut and Ak-Kem into the ice mountain Belukha. The Master of Altai took pity on them and gave them hot springs to keep warm.

20 km from Belokurikha is Mount Archa (Sinyukha), from which the Belokurikha river originates. The Altaians revered it as a special sacred mountain. Legends about mountain ranges tell where Light and Darkness made peace, guaranteed by Khan Altai. According to local tales, hot springs are a gift from the spirits of nature, connecting people with higher powers and granting healing.
